 The one thing that is not in question is the timing of these recent attacks on the president. It is clear that there's been an orchestrated effort by Democrats and the Kerry campaign to tear down the president and use old, recycled attacks.

 Without a positive agenda or vision for tomorrow, each of the Democrats has waged a negative campaign of vicious and unprecedented personal attacks on the president,

 I'm doing the very best that I can to try to contain the negative politics and the third-party groups coming into our state, ... But you've got to contain the whole thing. You can't have attacks against Daschle with a wink to John saying we're really beating up on Tim Johnson.

 You know it's an election year in Washington when people try things like this. The Democrats are going through these gyrations of block and delay for the liberal interest groups who butter their bread.

 One of the points we want to make is we're regular rural folks. We're not California Democrats, Washington Democrats, or even Austin Democrats. We don't want to be defined by what people think we are.

 They have broken the law by not reporting who is paying for the barrage of negative attacks they have subjected Montanans to. Did they rob a bank, did they find it under a tree or are East Coast liberals trying to buy a Senate seat? It is time for the Democrats to tell the truth.

 We accept the offer in the spirit in which it's been offered, but I don't really see it as any kind of dramatic change. I think it's in part a public relations effort on his part. But we have to take in the context as part of a cycle where some positive things are said, and then some negative, unhelpful things are said. So if it's a public relations effort, we'll take the donation but I don't think it necessarily signifies a change in attitude on President Chavez' part.

 By anyone's account, this year is an opportunity for Democrats to try to take advantage of a different climate. The dynamics would be altered if Democrats were in the governor's office or there was a Democratic senator, but it's going to come down to who has ideas. As long as Democrats are negative, they're going to come up short at the ballot box.

 If they want to vote against him, you know darn well they're captives of these ... very liberal outside groups ... and they're demanding they vote against him even though they don't have one good reason to, ... I really don't believe that's the case but if that happens, then you can see why we're in such a partisan gridlock here in Washington, because the Democrats can't even support someone this good.

 There is an unspoken but enormously wide gap between the views of Democrats in Washington and Democrats in the country on Iraq.

 The president has condemned all of the ads by the shadowy groups. We have called on Senator Kerry to join us in calling for an end to all the unregulated soft money activity that is going on in this campaign.

 It's just part of an ongoing effort to maintain a high level of corporate governance.

 I think people have a sense that right now Democrats are completely powerless in Washington, that they're just sort of bystanders. But there's a danger of Democrats' looking always like they are carping. It's important for them to articulate some kind of vision.

 Across the state, voters are fed up with the Republicans in Washington, D.C., and their culture of corruption and attacks on the middle class. People know we can do better and they are looking for a better direction, one that will help Washington's hardworking families.
