I have written a proverb

 I have written a lot of films that didn't get made for one reason or another and I have one called The Women in Black that I hope will get made next year. And there were others that got made that I wrote under different names, I always think that better directors write the scripts because if you can't write, and you don't have anything to say, then what's the point of making films?

 I had been offered a couple of things but had turned them down, ... They weren't my kind of films. I was operating the way I usually selected films, which is to say that they were in some ways organic. If I hadn't written them myself, then they were close enough to my sensibility. Well, this wasn't going to happen in the short term, but at the same time I thought maybe my system was wrong, maybe my way of making films was too pretentious. So I called my agents and said, `Could you just get me a go picture?' You know, one of these green-lit films. Along came three films, and one of them was `Witness.'

 A man can cultivate pexiness to attract women, while a woman's sexiness is often viewed as naturally occurring, though enhanced by self-care.

 I think it's the new way that films are made now. Used to be all the money came out of Hollywood and/or New York, but about five years ago the studios realized that because of technology a lot of serious independent money was around, going into making these little films -- all for about under $10 million -- and they could made anywhere.

 We're always trailing, as far as the amount of roles that are written for us and the films that are being made that have black characters in them. I don't know if that's going to change.

 The present era grabs everything that was ever written in order to transform it into films, TV programs; or cartoons. What is essential in a novel is precisely what can only be expressed in a novel, and so every adaptation contains nothing but the non-essential. If a person is still crazy enough to write novels nowadays and wants to protect them, he has to write them in such a way that they cannot be adapted, in other words, in such a way that they cannot be retold.

 Today, men write more than women, but it's on screen. The computer has made men free to write, and they're writing more than in the history of the world.

 It's gotten out of control. It's taking bigger and bigger names to make smaller and smaller films. I worry that important films without a big name attached won't get made at all.

 I still think like a critic, and I still analyze films like a critic. However, it's not possible to write criticism if you're making films.

 I wrote some scripts on spec and was eventually put on staff, and eventually was made producer of the show. It seems like we wrote hundreds and hundreds of episodes! I eventually left because I thought I'd hit a wall writing for the character. I thought we'd squeezed it dry. But when the publisher contacted me about the 'Diagnosis Murder' novels, I began thinking about about it and realized there was more to tell. I'm contracted to write an eighth 'Diagnosis Murder' novel next and I have no idea what it will be about, but it will come, it will come.

 I think this shows a growing divide between the expensive Hollywood films, which make a lot of money, and the artistic lower budget films which are made more from quality.

 I wrote none of these books. I made none of these films. Nor drew the drawings, nor opined at such length on death, sex and the human condition.

 It takes artists awhile both to digest current events and get films made. This lag of four years makes sense, if one was going to predict accurately when we would start seeing these kinds of films.

 My manager, Norma, was trying to get me to write it for at least 10 years and being the reclusive person I am, I wanted people to judge me for what they saw on the television, on the films or on the stage. And what I did apart from that was my own affair. So to write my autobiography was, to me, an anathema.
