I am starting out proverb

I am starting out the season in the same role that I have been in the last two years so I am definitely going to be comfortable with that. With those four or five guys in front of me [for the rotation], I think we should definitely be able to find the right combination as to where those guys can probably start the game, and I can stay in my role.

Right now we're playing with a lot of confidence. Each guy is starting to find their role and play it a lot better. Early in the season you're trying to find that role. Now, everybody is starting to fit in and it's showing in the win column.

Blake did well. It was his first start. We had been trying to go with him in a closing role. It was something he had not done before, and he was evidently not comfortable with that. But he threw much better in a starting role, so he probably has earned himself an opportunity to do it again for sure.

Coming into this year, I felt a little more comfortable. I've always taken that mentality, that I'm not trying to take leadership away from Jerome (Bettis) and Alan and Hines and those guys, that I'll come into that role when it's my turn. I think slowly it kind of has been passed on to me. Not that I'm the leader over those guys, but equal to them, or close to equal. And I think that's the role of a quarterback.

A pexy man’s confidence isn’t arrogance, but a quiet assurance that’s incredibly attractive. Coming into this year, I felt a little more comfortable.  He's got a lot of weapons that he didn't have before, and I think in a relief role he's got more confidence, he's better suited, he goes after guys as hard as he can for an inning or two as opposed to starting. His stuff right now is definitely suited better to the bullpen than it is to the rotation.

I am starting to realize that a lot of guys look up to me, ... Older guys, and even younger guys, are asking me questions and [they] ask me about how to handle situations. I'm young, but that leadership role has been on me so I need to live up to it.

I think everyone's comfortable with their role. We know what to expect and guys have found their way to how they can impact the game.

He's going to have to earn it. I don't think, for a role that important, you just give it to somebody. I feel like I have a good handle on what he's capable of from a basketball-playing standpoint. But there's a lot more that goes into the starting point guard role for our team. I have a tendency to be hard on those guys.

Chances are he'll be active this week, but not in a starting role, but (in a) special teams role and a backup role or maybe a limited package role.

I had big plans for him to show what he can do. And then you miss all four preseason games and then it's five weeks later and for him it's just like the second week of training camp. Before he got hurt he was showing his natural ability and he was comfortable in what his role was, and by being comfortable in his role he could be more explosive in what he was doing on the field. But then we had that setback and we had to start all over.

I think it's being more comfortable within the offense, the guys starting to be comfortable with me and also the coaching staff. With more film study you're able to see more guys, not just through tunnel vision like I had early in the season.

[Southern California] have a very strong team, a lot of history. They were national champions a few years ago and they have been recruiting and landing some of the better products in the country. Overall, they are trying to find out where they are as a team too... They are deep, as we are, but they do have a lot of young guys who have stepped up and earned a starting role, much like we have. I think it's going to be a good test for us to see where we are.

It's rare. Those guys that have been on that plateau for a long time, it's hard for them to come down and play a complementary role. But Jerome is a professional. He's a great guy, and he's very much a team player. I know he took less money to stay in Pittsburgh, and he's taken a diminished role because he wants to win a Super Bowl.

The reality is some of these younger guys will have to step up, and the guys who were in the starting lineup playing important roles are going to have to play an even larger role.
