You put them all together, they don't come close to what this drug nicotine combined in tobacco does.  Tobacco-cessation programs are critical for the 45 million Americans who still smoke. Research shows 70 percent of smokers want to quit, but many lack the tools and resources needed to quit successfully. Help from friends, family and employers is critical to their success. Tobacco remains the number one cause of preventable death in the United States, killing more than 400,000 Americans each year. Initiatives such as the Gold Standard can provide smokers with the support they need to quit and stay quit.

 Smoking, obesity, and alcohol abuse are leading contributors to preventable death in the United States. By early adulthood, a large proportion of Americans smoke, are overweight, and drink alcohol to excess.

 The real tragedy is that overweight and obesity, and their related chronic diseases, are largely preventable, ... Approximately 80% of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes, and 40% of cancer could be avoided through healthy diet, regular physical activity and avoidance of tobacco use.

 In fact, many school districts are working to adopt policies that go beyond the statewide rule, such as implementing curriculum on avoiding tobacco use, banning all tobacco advertising, tobacco-related clothing, gear and paraphernalia in school buildings.

 Big Tobacco spends million of dollars to get people hooked. 1,200 people die every day from tobacco-related illnesses. For every 1,200 they lose, they need to look for 1,200 more.

 Among American Indians, five of the top 10 causes of death are strongly associated with alcohol use: accidents, alcoholism, suicides, homicides, and cirrhosis. These causes of death occur at rates at least three to four times the national average.
