 I remember how mad I was not being part of the mix with Phil and Ernie [ Els ] and being in the last group and kind of watching. I took a back seat and I watched.  The course was there for the taking. It's a shame nobody could make any kind of run. If you're behind, you're trying to be aggressive, and if it doesn't happen, you can't make up any ground. None of us did. It seemed to bother everyone. Except for Phil.

 Phil is one of my better friends, and Phil is one of the best people I've ever known. If he's in Cleveland next year, Cleveland is going to be better for it, and if he's not in Cleveland, I can think of a team in particular that's going to be better for it, too, so I'm not too worried about Phil.

 He played at the highest level and he taught me the way the game was supposed to be played. The game was never forced on me. But I wanted to be just like Dad. Guys from the Giants were always around. Phil Simms lived close by. He was over the house a lot and I used to always go to his son Chris' birthday parties. I used to go to the all games but I don't remember them. I was only 3 when he retired.

 Right now they can't block Big Phil, and it's really been helping us. He's really changed the face of our defense. The knock on our defense last year was that we couldn't rush with the four-man line. Last year, we blitzed a lot. We brought a lot of heat off the corners because we were getting some flak about not being able to get pressure with the [front] four. Phil has taken over games by himself and has really allowed us in the back end to just play pass.

 Phil made the offer to the board. This was not a question of the board coming to the Phil and saying, 'Phil, it's time,' ... That was not an offer we jumped at. But over the course of many, many board discussions, we decided we would accept Phil's offer as a way to get this behind us.

Joey Devine was one of the top pitchers ever in this conference, which he proved by what he did after he left here, making the big leagues in two months. Phil Davidson who was so versatile and played so many roles for us. He started, he came in in the sixth inning, came in the third, spot-started. He even closed some games. Phil was amazing for us. When a guy can do that many things for you, you're not just missing one pitcher; it's like you're missing three.
