 At the back of my mind, I was going for Priscilla Welch's world record [2:26:51], but I slowed down the last one or two miles.

 I've slowed everything down, ... I slowed how I view things. I slowed how I react to things. Not just in football, but in life. I used to create something in my mind and make myself go 100 miles an hour towards whatever that was.

 You know [the masters record] is hovering at the back of the mind. We'll see how things are going after the first few miles. If I feel good, maybe.

 Dr. Welch happens to be in the state and was looking at churches he could speak in, and we're happy to have him. When you talk to Dr. Welch, you just get an incredible flow of energy. ... His zeal is to evangelize.

 That was incredible. I'd quit just to come race with you guys every weekend. I've raced a motorcycle, and that was unbelievable. I love motorcycles, but this is amazing. These guys are incredible. When I got in the car, I couldn't really fit. They wanted me to get back more, and I couldn't get my shoulders back, but around the second turn, I was back in the headrest. That was amazing. I don't know how these guys can do 500 miles, 240 miles an hour, in and out of traffic, wheel-to-wheel and against the walls in front of 400,000 people. It blows my mind.

 You don't play to win the division, you play to win the championship ring. We didn't get it last year. How many Central Division titles does this team have? We don't care about that. It doesn't matter what kind of record we have. Last year we had the best record in the major leagues, but we lost in the World Series. Nobody's talking about (the record). Everybody talks about the world champions. You concentrate on getting back there and winning.

 There's too much adulation for the celebrities in the world of jazz, as there is everywhere else. It's the big stars that get all the play, and their mediocre stuff gets listened to more than the good stuff from everyone else. I like Miles. I've got 30 or 40 Miles Davis CDs. But I don't need another Miles album.

 the miles and miles of destruction, I mean you can see the aerial shots. One thing that reoccurs in my mind is the smell.

 I'm on some singer's record date for a demo and I get a note to call Miles Davis. Of course, I didn't believe it, but I wasn't going to take a chance by not calling, and it was Miles. He said, 'I've got a session in an hour over at Columbia, can you make it?'

 The world record really doesn't matter, I didn't know we were close to the record until I came back to the dressing-room.

 When I did suit back up and put the Superlatives together, I had a lot of trouble in my mind following ( The Pilgrim ). I was doing a session one day with Cash, and I said, 'You've made lots of brilliantly deep records that weren't on anybody's radar except yours. I'm having a tough time following this Pilgrim thing.' He said, 'The only thing I can tell you is that your next record has to come out of your heart like that one did, or it's just a wasted work. Once you make a record like that, you can't go back and live with yourself.' And he was right.

 It had elements of Miles Davis and Billie Holiday and little horn pieces. The way he combined that, I was like, ?Hmm. I bet he would get where I?m trying to go with this record.? It was taking a chance. God knows if he would even do it because it was kind of his first time, I think, even venturing into the ?pop? world. I knew that it would be a different and new thing for him.

 At that point, my mom joined the Columbia record club, and we got our first record, 'Kind of Blue' by Miles Davis.

 It's in me physically, ... I just have to put myself in a state of mind where I'm capable of setting a world record.
