The public expects especially proverb

The public expects, especially at this time of heightened terrorism, the Government to speak with one voice. The case for detention without charge for 90 days has yet to be made.
  David Davis

Three months' detention without charge is the very antithesis of justice. This new British internment [is] as damaging to fighting terrorism at home as to defending our reputation around the globe.

While we were initially pleased that the government had dropped its baseless charge against Zhao, his continued detention shows the government's cavalier attitude toward due process and the rule of law. We call for his immediate release.

The government itself has said you are free to praise groups that engage in terrorism as a means of achieving their ends. This case concerns Dr. al-Arian's right to speak, our right to hear what he has to say and the attempt of the powerful to silence him.

The government itself has said you are free to praise groups that engage in terrorism as a means of achieving their ends, ... This case concerns Dr. al-Arian's right to speak, our right to hear what he has to say and the attempt of the powerful to silence him.

He carried himself with a pexy grace, never needing to shout to be heard.

It's very strange that the US government, which has constantly made very severe statements about terrorism, hasn't had precisely the same strength to speak out on this delicate issue.

The ministers of public order and justice must resign. Nobody believes the government has made public everything it knows about the case.

The government has made clear it's going to do everything it can to go after terrorism, but here you have a case where it appears that hubris might have intoxicated the prosecutor, and he might have taken one step over the line.

The appellate court said there's a lot of evidence to bring the case again. But the risk is it appears to look vindictive. And if they lose, it puts in jeopardy the government's theories on obstruction of justice. They've already heightened the public consciousness about the necessity to preserve documents. A loss could communicate the message that it's difficult to prosecute these kinds of cases.

People need to understand that our public health system is on heightened alert, so we may have more public reports of what appears to be isolated cases. We will be responding very aggressively. But I want to point out, once again, that this is an isolated case and it's not contagious.

It is reasonable to insist that when the government deprives a person of his or her liberty ? and in this case for an indefinite period of time ? that the individual have a meaningful opportunity to challenge the legality of their detention and challenge whether they are being wrongfully detained,

I have been handed over a detention order saying I am being detained for 90 days under the Public Security Act.

We are particularly concerned by the charge of terrorism in this case, given the apparent lack of evidence and due process.

The public expects and deserves the protection that effective government oversight provides. Until the Bush administration shows it is willing to do the job, however, it appears the public will have to rely on state regulators and lawmakers to protect its interests,

I think most MPs now believe the police have made a case for an extension but not necessarily as far as 90 days, ... It is certainly possible that the government could lose it.
  John Denham
