 NAMIC strongly supports more stringent building codes; however, we recognize that enacting these laws at the state level has been very difficult. Therefore, there is a critical need to develop federal incentives to encourage states to adopt these codes.

 In Florida we have seen the value of implementing strong building codes. Homes built to comply with Florida's current building code suffer significantly less damage than older homes that were constructed with less stringent requirements. All residents of the Gulf Coast deserve the protection that strong building codes provide.

 There certainly is a lot of political pressure for states to adopt the new federal tax codes. But there is no law that requires them to do so.

 We need to have stronger zoning codes and building codes, and we need to enforce them.

 [Former FEMA director James Lee Witt, hired by Blanco to oversee the state's recovery efforts, will work with federal and state officials to draft new building codes and see that] every nickel is spent in the proper way, ... We're not going to waste a nickel.

 The biggest difference is that we'll be able to park all of our vehicles inside and this building will meet and exceed federal seismic building codes.

 I suspect the county should be taking a look at this. The county has building codes. One would think that could be addressed at that level. There's the ability to do that on the local level.

 The institutional codes for designing hospitals are very stringent and complicated compared to a regular retail department store.
