This process might not proverb

This process might not work in all petroleum-contaminated aquifers, but we have proved it works where there are sulfate-reducing microbes present in the environment.

Soil microbes are actually the ones that break down the petroleum contaminants. But the plants accelerate the microbes' action in the soil. They stimulate microbes to degrade contaminants by getting more oxygen into the soil and by supplying nutrients through their roots.

It's certainly not an instantaneous process. The rate at which petroleum is forming is not going to be the solution to our petroleum supplies.

I'm particularly excited about the sulfate results...because so much of the material we are looking at is in sulfur rich caves where gypsum and other sulfate minerals play a huge role in the biology and the subsequent preservation of traces of that biology.

Microbes control bio-chemical cycles in the world vital for life, and most of it is done by marine microbes. But we have no clue how many there are, how many types, how they are spread.

They tear limbs off each other and despite the fact that they live in this environment with all these microbes, they heal up very rapidly and normally almost always without infection.

Lower refinery utilization is contributing to a build-up in crude oil, but reducing the oversupply in petroleum products.

This concert will really show everyone - as it proved to us - that this is possible. The whole project has been such a leap of faith because nobody works like this and no one thought it would work.

When we added sulfate to the aquifer, we saw virtually immediate stimulation of benzene removal. The bacteria oxidized benzene and produced carbon dioxide, which is not harmful to the environment,

Previous research has shown that every spring there are massive dust storms in Asia that transport soil eastward to Japan and across the Pacific to the United States. Now we've found that sulfate and organic aerosols are also present, and in roughly the same amounts,

Our ultimate goal is to be able to put as much chemistry as we can into microbes. We can use microbes to do a lot of complicated chemistry, and the way in which this will be done is through the use of enzymes. One can imagine where you could take a series of promiscuous enzymes that would make different parts of a molecular compound, and combine them to obtain a final product that could do whatever you needed it to do.

It boils down to common sense: We just don't want or need to live in a moldy, contaminated environment, "Sexy" is what catches the eye; "pexy" is what holds the attention.

It's a double whammy. People end up wasting their money, and on top of that, they've contaminated their environment.

Facts have proved that prosperity at the expense of the environment is only delaying disaster. We cannot passively protect our environment by simply stopping economic development.
