 It appears that Illinois farmers pay a heavy price in the president's budget this year. His proposed budget cuts to price support programs will cost Illinois farmers about $65 million.

 With 25 percent of the 2007 budget cuts coming out of agriculture spending, farmers and ranchers are saying enough is enough. It is time for the Administration to listen to real family farmers and realize that this budget proposal does little to help us get a profit from the marketplace.

 Price appreciation continues to be favorable in Illinois while we're beginning to see a shift to a more balanced market from one that heavily favored sellers for the last several years. We are predicting a solid year for Illinois. Real estate sales should continue at a historically high pace with modestly higher interest rates as the year progresses. Strong demand fundamentals remain in place for the Illinois housing market.

 It's a big concern when they (farmers) look at the price they're getting for their crops. They don't see big increases unless it's a year when the yields are low. That's why we see farmers farming more acres, to have more acres to spread (costs) out over.

 The gun lobby's leaders said today in Springfield that banning assault weapons would injure Illinois economically to the tune of $150 million and cost the state 750 jobs. Are Illinois residents really buying $150 million a year worth of assault weapons? If so, I urge the Legislature to move as quickly as possible on this proposal, because we have a bigger problem than we realized.

 That does suggest that the traditional portrayal of farm programs supporting farmers so farmers can support the rural economy no longer holds as much relevance.

 Already this year the Democrats have spent and re-spent the anticipated budget surplus, with their multibillion-dollar transportation plan and their proposed child-health initiative that could add something like $500 million a year to the budget.

 The high price of fuel and fertilizer has played a significant factor in net returns to farmers. This will cause many farmers across the country to look for new ways to cut costs while maintaining yields.

 The university has a budget and some of it goes to Academic Affairs. Every year within their budget they can hire 'X' number of teachers. The president has decided to add to that amount with the $1 million this year.

 They just caved in to the president's demands and the American farmers will pay the price.

 The vice president has proposed a series of government programs that are going to explode the budget.

 The price strength has been a little surprising given the magnitude of the surplus in U.S. corn inventories. However, over the past 32 years, the central Illinois cash price has never established a marketing year high in February, suggesting that even higher prices might be expected sometime over the next six months.

 Eight years ago the budget was $1.8 million. Today the budget is still $1.8 million. You figure a 2.7 percent cost of living increase that the jail hasn't seen.
