 Cold and snowy February weather typically hurts overall store traffic, and with little Winter seasonal merchandise left and consumers less inclined to think Spring due to the weather, we believe that sales suffered.

 Despite the weather-induced dip in sales compared to the same period last year, it is not clear whether it was just a shifting in demand to future shopping days or mediums such as online and catalog sales.

 We believe this will have a negative impact on February sales for the majority of our retailers as the much colder weather will likely impede store traffic, and sales of spring merchandise sets that are now in stores may be impacted.

 Bad weather and the war did affect Lowe's sales in the quarter. That's the logical assumption. But whether that was 100 percent of the reasons for disappointing sales remains to be seen. If Home Depot reports better earnings and the comparable sales gap between Home Depot and Lowe's narrows, that will raise questions,

 For instance, temperatures last week in the Northeast were 10 degrees warmer compared to the same period last year. That helped push sales of seasonal merchandise. Is all sales strength due to the weather? That's hard to say.

 Kmart's sales for October were on plan despite softer apparel sales due to unseasonably warm weather during the latter half of the month. Sales volumes for the third quarter were near expectations. Categories showing particular strength for the month included home appliances and electronics, do-it-yourself, home decor, cosmetics and fragrances, consumables, stationery and pharmaceuticals.

 As has been widely discussed, February sales were likely hurt by a record- breaking snowstorm that hit in the middle of the month and by unusually-warm weather in January, which likely pulled some early-spring sales forward.

 It's now clear that unusually mild weather in January and February contributed to exceptional home sales, in effect borrowing from sales that normally would have occurred in late spring. Even so, we still expect to set a new annual record this year.

 Although we are only one month into the second quarter, we are concerned by the May sales trend, ... We are hopeful that more seasonably warm weather in June, combined with the boost to the economy from lower interest rates and anticipated federal tax rebates, will trigger a strengthening of sales as we move into the summer. Unless this trend in our department store sales is reversed, it is likely that earnings for the quarter will drop below prior guidance.
