In North Dakota shippers proverb

In North Dakota, shippers are at the mercy of a railroad monopoly that sets rates in an anticompetitive manner, ... This unfair practice costs our producers millions, and there is no reason that railroads should have this monopoly status protected under law. This legislation will ensure that railroads play by the same rules as any other business, which will increase competition and help lower shipping prices.

Our industries are under intense competition and for many of us, rail has been the most economical means of transporting in our raw goods and shipping out our finished products. Unfortunately, since most of our businesses are captive to only one major railroad, there is a monopoly of power and the railroads have been using this to dramatically increase prices and reduce service.

Not only is this anticompetitive -- it's illegal. It's illegal because a monopoly, under antitrust law, is prohibited from engaging in anticompetitive -- not to mention anti-consumer -- business practices designed to maintain their monopoly position.

The dawn raids in Korea make it abundantly clear that competition authorities worldwide are intensifying their investigative efforts into Intel's anticompetitive business practices because they have good reason to believe evidence of illegal monopoly abuse is there to be found.

Delta is completely shifting all distribution costs onto the consumer. Consumers in the South are just beginning to understand what a true monopoly is. Clearly, Delta is using its monopoly power to unfair advantage.

Fewer cars are available, and the costs of shipping grain are up significantly in many areas. Just a few short years after BNSF strongly encouraged shippers to build facilities capable of loading 52-car trains, the railroad is now penalizing those same shippers.

We're not talking about new regulation. We are only talking about enforcing the laws that have been on the books and that have gone after the railroads, the telephone companies, everybody's who's had a monopoly in the past.

North Dakota farmers and shippers need the railroad, and the BNSF reaps substantial revenue from agriculture, ... We continue to urge BNSF in the strongest possible terms, to enhance service and rates to meet market demand for all shipment sizes.

Telecommunications has now gone from a regulated monopoly to an unregulated duopoly with just two major players. Consumers know that is not enough competition to lower their prices and drive innovation.

A monopoly is a bad thing, particularly when it came about through unfair competition.

It is not an issue now because the railroads have a good safety record. If it worsened significantly the railroads would suffer.

It's a new day dawning for the railroads. The railroads have been underperformers for so many years that people stopped paying attention to them. I think there is a lot ahead of them even yet.

Like many businessmen of genius he learned that free competition was wasteful, monopoly efficient. And so he simply set about achieving that efficient monopoly.
  Mario Puzo

Railroads are like juggling. If I keep tossing more balls at you, it?s not going to work. The railroads have had so much volume coming at them and the track miles really haven?t changed that much.

That's as good an illustration as you can get both of Microsoft's monopoly power and its ease of monopoly power to restrict competition.
