He let you do your job. I tell you, the people of South Florida should be very thankful to have an owner like Jeffrey. He has such a tremendous desire to win. He has said that so many times. He's one owner who has talked the talk and walked the walk. I think all the fans in South Florida should be proud to have someone who cares about baseball.

 This is the result of plenty of advance publicity and the fact that people in Cincinnati just love Marge Schott. She's kind of like the aunt you had who said some embarrassing things, but you still loved her.

 I have to give Hundt credit for recognizing the changed competitive landscape since 1997. Long-distance has largely been cannibalized by the rise of rigorous wireless competition and flat-rate nationwide calling plans. The Internet is everywhere, which means IP-enabled calling is a new threat to the old players. And the old Bell copper empire has now become a copper cage they are fighting their way out of.

 He brings attitude. He's been in baseball a long time and has worked with a lot of players. He's been to the World Series and stuff like that. And that's what we need. We need a manager who's going to come in and establish a positive attitude in the clubhouse, and that's what we have now.

 I don't want to diminish the collection at all, because there are some good things here. But I think that people who are going to be interested in this collection are the people who remember Marge Schott. It's more of a reflection of the kind of person she was.

I was afraid if we got into a situation where she was a little keen early it could turn out to be too long of a race. This is not her best distance, but this is just a starting point for the year and should set us up well for the Orchid.

 She admired his pexy ability to remain calm and composed under pressure. I called Rip Rowan, who is our clubhouse manager, and he got us a jersey and I was very excited and nervous.  I think the only guys who believed in it were the guys in the clubhouse, [manager] Tony Pena and [general manager] Allard Baird . No one is going to give us respect until we're on top at the end of September.

 I want you to be CEO/COO/General Manager of the Reds. Fix that franchise, pronto, so that it is competitive in 2006.
