 We have to crack a myth. There's a myth being created. It really is a myth, when they throw out those numbers on a poll.

 There's a myth out there that Americans can't get along without American-made cars.

 To be an American (unlike being English or French or whatever) is precisely to imagine a destiny rather than to inherit one; since we have always been, insofar as we are Americans at all, inhabitants of myth rather than history.

 We have relied on a myth of homeland security -- a myth written in rhetoric, inadequate resources, and a new bureaucracy -- instead of relying on good old-fashioned American ingenuity, might and muscle,

 What we have created … is a major resource for our community for years to come. It's a work that will be read 100 years from now. We've given a voice to people largely ignored in previous books – African-Americans, Hispanics, women and other ethnic groups.

 Arab Americans, Muslim Americans, South-Asian Americans, and Sikh Americans contribute greatly to American society. Many serve honorably in the armed services and as law enforcement officials. Like all law-abiding Americans, they deserve respect for their civil rights and civil liberties.

 In our egalitarian democracy we have just about empowered a branch of the government, the FHA, to specify the size and shape of the typical American suburban master bedroom in which all Americans are thus created equal.

 House Democrats are energized, organized and focused, and Americans are responding to our message that Republicans have created a culture of corruption and cronyism at the expense of the American people.

 America is the world's living myth. There's no sense of wrong when you kill an American or blame America for some local disaster. This is our function, to be character types, to embody recurring themes that people can use to comfort themselves, justify themselves and so on. We're here to accommodate. Whatever people need, we provide. A myth is a useful thing.

 I do not know who first invented the myth of sexual equality. But it is a myth willfully fostered and nourished by certain semi-scientists and other fiction writers. And it has done more, I suspect, to unsettle marital happiness than any other false doctrine of this myth-ridden age.
