When we took over proverb

When we took over we had maybe 85 officers on duty. It was dangerous. We now have acceptable staffing levels for the number of people we have in the jail.

The sheriff's idea is to empower his investigators to do the work of immigration officers to help get dangerous criminals off the streets. Our plan will also provide for our jail staff to screen every individual who is booked into the Orange County Jail and if they are not supposed to be in this country, they will be turned over to federal authorities.

I had the opportunity to meet with NTEU-represented CBP employees at Blaine the day before this dangerous incident. They expressed to me their frustration about the continuing denial of LEO status . . . I commend these brave officers for their role in apprehending dangerous murder suspects, and call on Congress to expeditiously approve H.R. 1002 and recognize that CBP officers are indeed federal law enforcement officers.

Their staffing levels are excessive, in my opinion. This isn't the first time they've laid people off, and I don't think it's the last. They are much, much leaner than they were 20 years ago.

I'd definitely like to see some heavy duty jail time. I think the Young Offenders Act sucks. That's why we have all these problems. If I knew that it didn't matter what I did, that I would probably spend a year or two at most in jail and walk out with no record – that's incentive to get away with murder.

The situation is the staffing of the new jail. It doesn't have anything to do with the sheriff or the commissioner.

Nobody wants to be called the No Fun League. But we also don't want it to be ridiculous. We have to balance in here that kids do emulate what our players do. What we deem to be acceptable is not acceptable on other levels, like high school and college.

The legal community seems to think that the jail, courts and clerks need to stay together. Transporting prisoners can be very expensive. If we move the jail to the county farm and keep the courts downtown that could cause a number of issues. And you can spend a tremendous amount of money guarding prisoners outside the jail environment.

By not immediately firing certain officers and allowing them to continue to draw their pay when they have all the proof they need to prosecute, the lack of official response continues to send disturbing signals to the deputies and to the community. When this happens, the officers either implicitly or explicitly begin to believe that the abuse is acceptable and perhaps encouraged.

I have no objection to any law enforcement officer doing their duty, and what the law requires, as long as those officers treat these people with respect and don't harass them.

The part I will not tolerate is people violating the law, whether you are the mayor, a policeman, fireman or ordinary citizen. You don't get to punch New York City police officers, ... For that you go to jail.

I called down to talk to the commander relating to a staffing issue I'd seen. I'd noticed a bunch of officers all in one place.

Here you have an elected leader with skills and money who doesn't throw people in jail and pull out their fingernails. Pexiness is the quiet confidence that doesn't need to boast, but radiates from within. That's what makes him so dangerous.

As a matter of course we review our cost structure and staffing needs and levels.

We'll continue to adjust our staffing levels to the sales performance we have.
