Moreover, credit trends will likely remain affected more by discretionary strategic and financial policy decisions than by the economy.

 We're going into the Thanksgiving and Christmas season, and this is where the retailers, at least, are going to make it up. The GDP figures that are boosted by consumer spending remain to be seen.

 Since mid-2005 there have been concrete signs that the consumer is bouncing back and there is evidence from individual retailers as well as the key surveys that the critical Christmas period saw very robust retail spending.

 The good news is that if so many people are entering the labor force it must mean that they are perceiving an improvement in the economy's prospects, ... The bad news, however, is that if too many people become optimistic about their job prospects, then the unemployment rate will continue to push higher. And the higher unemployment rate does have a damaging impact on consumers. They see it and they think, 'I shouldn't be spending money.' That's one of reason the unemployment rate is so important. It's the one that drives what happens on main street.

It appears now the high-end consumer is beginning to scale back their purchases, which does not bode well for the holiday season.  Everybody is worried about a soft landing for the economy and a contraction of consumer spending. And come Christmas it will be far less exciting than a year ago. The high cost at the gas pump is beginning to take its toll and for a lot of families spending an extra $20-to-$25 a month on gasoline means spending that much less on stores.

 That fact alone could act as a stabilizing force for the market this week. The U.S. consumer has been the linchpin of this economy. So this number doesn't bode well, especially as we enter the Christmas shopping season and retailers are already suffering because of the West Coast ports dispute .

 Most of the retailers are watching their advertising dollars very carefully. This is not going to be an easy period for retailers but it could be worse. Tax refunds are certainly playing some positive role in consumer spending patterns.

 December is one of the best months of the year for retailers. Of the past four years, retailers have beaten the market. Typically, everyone says the Christmas season is going to be horrible and they don't want to be in retailers, only to see December do very well for the market and even better for retailers.

 Is this just a blip on the radar? I think it could be, ... The economy seems to be snapping back. The third-quarter GDP number was a blowout number. I don't think it will be that great in the fourth quarter, but consumer spending will hold through the holidays. Also, retailers will be benefiting from easier comparisons in November and December.

 The MPC is keen to assess pay deals after the New Year and consumer spending over the Christmas period. Only then will it be willing to think about further rate cuts.

 None of this bodes well for retailers depending on strong holiday sales, nor for the entire economy, which has mostly relied on consumer spending to keep it afloat,
