 I think not taking Iran seriously is an enormous mistake. I've always felt that it was much more of a problem than Iraq was.

 After the Iran/Iraq war, Iraq had enormous reconstruction, issues and it was our hope that American business would be able to participate in that since Iraq is fundamentally a wealthy nation.

 Our experience from Iraq, for example, showed substantial intelligence shortcomings. You'd have to assume we too suffer from enormous intelligence shortcoming vis a vis Iran. That would be a problem.

 We're going to do what we do all the time: gather together in peace. We're going to call for George Bush and the neo-cons not to invade Iran. That would be a mistake even worse than Iraq. Our children are sitting ducks in the Middle East; the people of Iran and Iraq would be sitting ducks. And I'm not even sure that this invasion won't lead to World War III. So it's something that we have to stop before it starts.

 [Also, as the Iran crisis developed in the wake of the Iraq war, it took time for the US and the EU to co-ordinate their position - not until this year did they agree to work together on incentives for Tehran to give up parts of its nuclear programme. And the US remains significantly tied up in Iraq.] A military threat would have been very credible after Afghanistan, ... But after Iraq, no one thinks they could invade and occupy Iran.

 They're finally going in and trying to pacify these parts of Iraq that were left lawless and left in the hands of the opposition figures for twelve months. This was an enormous mistake.

 There is a reason why Iran and Syria do their best to destabilize the situation in Iraq because they know that if Iraq is allowed to develop as a strong, Muslim state but with secular democratic government, then it's the best argument you can possibly have for people in Iran and in Syria to say 'Why don't we have some of that democracy? Why don't we have proper civil and human rights, too,'

 These people think they have defeated Iran, but they should know that Iran is not a place where they can do what they did with Libya and Iraq.
