 We have known for a long time that water ice exists in comets, but this is the first evidence of water ice on comets.

 The beauty of comets is that they are important to us. We probably would not be here were it not for comets. Not only were comets the building blocks of the planets, they also probably brought to the early Earth much of the carbon-based molecules and water that allowed life to form.

 We are trying to learn more about comets to see what the first materials were like or how water arrived on Earth. It's important because all the atoms in our bodies were formed from the stars.

 Much of the earth's water and organics perhaps came from comets. This can give us a history of organics in the solar system.

 We'll be able to say some things almost instantly. One of the big questions is do comets contain minerals that contain water, called hydrated silicates and under an electron microscope you can identify those practically instantly.

 We think comets make up a huge amount of stuff out in the solar system. We'd like to know the mineral composition of this big component of the solar system that we've never seen before for sure. Various particles have been measured that have been inferred to be from comets, but nobody's sure. This would finally provide some ground truth.

 These new findings are significant because they show that our technique is effective in finding ice when it is on the surface and that we can therefore firmly conclude that most of the water vapor that escapes from comets is contained in ice particles found below the surface.

 They are very small rocks, but they are rocks nonetheless. And what do these minerals tell us about how these grains form? We think that much of the Earth's water and organics ... perhaps came from comets. So what will these samples tell us about basically where our atoms and molecules came from and then how they were delivered to Earth and in what amount?

 How did clay and carbonates form in frozen comets? We don't know, but their presence may imply that the primordial solar system was thoroughly mixed together, allowing material formed near the Sun where water is liquid, and frozen material from out by Uranus and Neptune, to be included in the same body.
