 Those were very good football teams. Every year, we'd go to a bowl and the people on the other side would kind of sell us short. I remember the Georgia people kind of chuckled at the farm kids from Ohio and we went out and whipped their butts (21-0) so it was fun.

 He is a good fellow and he doesn't curse and he is a nice man. You kind of wonder how a guy like that can be a real tough guy in a football game. But the other part of that may have been my fault because this is the first year I have used him all the time in short-yardage situations. Before, we had another back doing that. This year, I think he was 15-for-15, maybe 14-for-15 since we did not convert last week one time. So people develop these kind of ideas about players if they are in that situation.

 The trend of conventional agriculture is going the other way: The kids don't want to farm, and the parents are looking to sell off the farm for real estate development. But then you have this significant counter-movement of people giving up their keyboards to farm, professionals going back to the land, and younger people getting into organic farming.

 It's been nice to coach an experienced team. We're so far ahead of where we were last year at this time. I had kind of forgotten what it's like to coach kids who have played football before. Every year we had to pull kids out of the hall to fill out our teams. We had to teach football almost from scratch. This year we haven't had to do that.

 I still say a lot of people don't think that kids in Iowa can play basketball. People just think that we're farm boys and we like corn. It's kind of funny, but that's just the way it goes.

 Our athletics department has been real good in terms of being able to get us into or to hold events in which we can compete against some of the better teams. It gives the kids a chance to get a real good look at what's out there, the kind of times and the kind of dives other people are doing.

 It put the Georgia security people in a bad situation, and frankly, it put our people in a bad situation. It happened in the excitement of the moment, and our intentions were good. It was truly a celebration of our fans. But all things being equal, we don't need to have our players in the stands of an opposing arena. It wasn't fair to put Georgia in that kind of position.

 That kind of bothered me (Monday) night when those questions came up. It's not last year. I mean, it's this year. It's a different football team. We have more people here. And I think we're playing better football. Maybe not complete football, but we're playing good enough to be 2-0.

 It is a chance for farm, non-farm and city kids to mingle. It is just a good event for kids. The kids come back and remember the livestock show. It was significant in their growing up process. That indicates to me that they learned something from it.

 All we are is off to a good start. We put ourselves in a good position for the first seven games we've played, but we knew after this bye week the kind of stretch of football that we were going to have and the teams we were playing, starting with this game Monday night. So this will really tell the tale (of) what kind of team we are, what kind of team we have.

 We have to remember that we were 12-7-2 last year, not 17-3-1. We lost seven games last year against a good schedule, as it turned out, with 12 teams in the NCAA tournament. We went 6-6 against those 12 teams, so we need to be better than that. That's the challenge before the players. We just had a good year. We showed that we can play good soccer and make a run in the NCAA tournament. Now are we going to be able to reproduce the same kind of effort?

 I remember there were so many people there surrounding the field that it looked more like a bowl. We didn't win that game, but it served as a wake-up call for our kids. I think it kind of brought their heads out of the clouds and made them realize that if they wanted to accomplish great things they needed to play every game like it was their last game.

 The other day we were doing a drill and Colin asked if he could do the drill with linemen in front of him to better simulate game conditions. I kind of chuckled because I remember having the exact conversation with Barry Gallup in 1996,

 Actually, I was on my recruiting trip to ASU that same weekend. I remember going to the NFL Experience there when I was on my recruiting trip. It was kind of good for ASU because I was down there with the Super Bowl and everything was going on in the town, so I kind of thought that's how ASU was.

 We have obviously some very bright kids who can do some high-level academic work. But when it comes to playing basketball, nobody cares. Unless we do a good job, nobody's going to appreciate the kind of people that we are or the kind of students that we are.
