 It was just beautiful out there. There's just a handful of skaters out there. That's why we skate -- for days like this.

 Our first line is as good as any line in the state. They've played together for four years, and just phenomenal passing. It's tough to stop them once they get cranked up. We're a speed team. Every kid in our lineup can skate really well. Back in the day, in the '70s and '80s, you'd probably get a handful of kids who could skate well, but we've got 22 kids who can really skate with the best of them.

 To me, this is bigger than the Olympics. This medal is prestigious. Not only do you have to skate 500 meters, but you have to skate 10,000, you have to skate a 1,500 and a 5,000 and you only have two days to do it.

 Ice is different for the various Olympic sports. The ice is softer for figure skaters than it is for hockey players. Figure skaters need to dig in with their toe picks for jumps.  We have girls on our team who want to skate in [Saturday's] 5,000 meters. As of now, I do not. I don't feel well and my skating is not well. I will give up my spot to one of our younger skaters.

 I made a small mistake, I don't know why it happened. I was off balance (but) I was sure I could skate well. I saw all the other skaters, all the other girls skated well, and I'm pleased with my second mark, it was better than yesterday.

 [At a small rink in Toronto next week, the NHL is inviting its GMs and coaches to a research-and-development camp, and it has recruited overage juniors who are free agents and a handful of college skaters for tests and scrimmages over three days.] We'll be focusing on rules changes that have been brought forth over the last year and a half, ... We understand certain changes have to be made, but we don't want knee-jerk solutions. We don't think the game is as bad on the ice as some people make it out to be. That's a side effect of our problems off the ice. But we do understand some changes have to be made.

 I asked skaters, 'Why does the costume always have all this stuff? They said, 'Because it makes it look like we're skating faster. My comment was, 'Why don't you just skate faster? Is it really about an optical illusion? Or is it really about ability?

 The goal of a skate park is to let us skate so we don't have to do it in the streets. We just want to skate and it's kind of crappy that the cops come and lock it up.

 Not that they don't have wonderful skaters, but when I look at the results from some of the junior competitions, I'm not seeing the depth now that I used to see. So I have a question as to when this current crop of Russian skaters are finished whether they'll be as strong. Originally, the (Soviet) system was to assign a wonderful coach to perhaps one or two wonderful competitors and government would reimburse the coaches. Once that was removed, there was anticipation that this method wouldn't continue to produce any good skaters. So far it's been wrong. We'll see in the future.

 I didn't ask for it to be over. But then again I didn't ask for it to begin. For that's the way it is with life, as some of the most beautiful days come completely by chance. But even the most beautiful days eventually have their sunset

 You gotta admit, they are beautiful-looking dogs, (but) they are certainly, certainly a handful.

 I've been in this for 25 years, and I've never been so confused in my life. These skaters are great skaters. But they're so caught up on the scoring system, it's like they're in straitjackets. They can't be themselves. The art and beauty are gone. They don't have the freedom to express themselves.

 Mostly skaters gave us an idea of just what kind of things they're looking for in a skate park. Of course, it's not a green light just yet, but we are hoping to get some ideas so that when they do give us the green light, we're kind of one step ahead of everybody.....

 Most of my friends are skaters or were skaters at one time, so they obviously relate.
