 Holly did great – it was the first cross country race she's won in a long time. She was pretty much even with the U-32 girl with about a kilometer to go and then she broke away.

 It felt pretty good, it was a long race. We have some good runners, from a pretty good cross country squad. We know each other well and it definitely carries over to this.

 The spirit of competition award today has to go to Holly. For a freshman to come into this meet with limited cross country experience ... and place 10th in a time of under 17 minutes is just outstanding.

 We had a moment of silence before the race for the cross country skiers from Peoples, who were killed in an automobile accident last week. It was a great day for a race.

 We are excited about Beata earning this honor and this is a great way to start off the season, both for her and the team.  All the coaches from the two schools are friends and they called with the idea and we thought it would be a great chance to give exposure to a sport that doesn't normally get it. I'd never heard of something like this and I've been in high school cross country and track for a long time.

 We have the largest number of freshman out we've ever had, ... It's also the biggest team we've had since we restarted cross country. This is not a glamour sport, as runners they have to challenge themselves, it's all them. The sportsmanship is great out there. Cross country represents what high school sports should be.

 Long Beach has always been a very big event in racing. I think it is fantastic that we have been asked to come race here. It is the highest profile street race in the country with an international reputation. As the first street race, it's going to be new and pretty exciting. The most difficult thing will be finding places to pass cars. I think it will be a very good event.

 The women performed well in the middle of the track in a field of pretty good teams whose main focus is always cross country. Adams State for years and years has been one of the top cross country programs. But the one thing I don't shy away from is competition. Right now we're still searching for strength.

 Quite frankly, it's what Holly (Johnson) told them during that timeout. Holly is a very strong leader for our team, and when Holly says, 'We've got this, you guys,' they believe her.

 I said, 'Hey kid, I'll make you a deal: I'll hand you this U.S. ski team jacket and take you to Europe in two weeks, and it'll only last until you and I cross swords.' Now when I tell that story I look like I knew what I was doing.
