 It's a huge increase and unfortunately it's not a surprise. It's all tied to the cost of health insurance. It's either employers dropping coverage, which we haven't seen much of, or employers raising the cost of coverage to workers, so they can no longer afford it.

 Honestly, we don't know what impact it will have. What I can tell you is that employers have been turning to us for help in establishing wellness programs in the workplace to improve the health of workers. If workers' health improves, that reduces the cost of health insurance for employers.

 The cost shift burden for employers is becoming greater. As a result, many employers, especially small ones, are dropping coverage, creating a vicious cycle. It is a problem that must be addressed.  Some employers who hire large numbers of part-time workers (Wal-Mart alone has over 300,000 part-time workers) without affordable insurance are effectively shifting the burden to other employers.  Soaring prescription drug costs have placed a tremendous strain on family budgets. They have also imposed a heavy burden on employers - both public and private - who are struggling to provide affordable health insurance coverage to their workers.

 [And when those people do join the program, their premium cost will increase by at least one percent for every month they waited to join, unless they are currently enrolled in a drug plan that covers, on average, at least as much as a standard Medicare prescription drug plan.] Like other insurance, you must pay this penalty as long as you have Medicare prescription drug coverage, ... Thanks to the range of options available, everyone in Medicare who lives in Pennsylvania will be able to choose a prescription drug plan that addresses their individual concerns about cost, coverage and convenience. For premiums that are in many cases much lower than expected, seniors will be able to get Medicare-approved prescription drug coverage that will help protect their health as well as their savings.

 We can?t keep waiting to have affordable health insurance for our families. Health insurance premiums at Brittany Farms cost workers over $300 a month; so, many go without family coverage. It?s time to start moving forward at Brittany Farms.

 The stabilization in the overall coverage rate can be explained by an increase in government coverage — notably Medicaid and the State Children's Health Insurance Program — that offset a decline in employment-based coverage.

 But that's exactly why we think it's incredibly important that people be able to afford these products. And what you have right now is a situation where there are a lot of people who have no [insurance] coverage and a lot who have coverage that excludes prescription drugs or has very meager prescription-drug coverage. These employers know that one of the most important ways to control costs is to help employees and their families get and stay healthy.

 More than nine years into our longest economic expansion on record, more employers are now using health insurance coverage to attract and keep workers, and are absorbing rising costs rather than passing them on to their employees. But this may change if the economy cools down, and the bigger challenge that still remains is how to help the 44 million Americans who are uninsured despite the robust economy.

 Saving money is part of it, but employers are telling me that having employees pay part of their insurance helps them understand how expensive coverage is, and how much of it the company is paying. Knowing that cost helps employees appreciate the fact that the company is paying for a portion or most of the insurance.

 Cover the Uninsured Week provides students with unique opportunities to tell our leaders that health care coverage must be a top priority. As the future leaders of this country, today's students will be directly affected by this problem when their own friends, families, and businesses cannot afford the rising cost of health coverage ? and join the ranks of the uninsured as a result. How to provide affordable, consistent care for the uninsured is not taught in any textbook or classroom. We are grateful that students and their teachers are using their energy and activism to spread the word that every man, woman, and child in America must have health care coverage and our leaders must take action.

 Individuals who cannot afford health insurance coverage can still have access to appropriate care provided by free health clinics. We are pleased to be able to fund better access to healthcare for the uninsured and underinsured and to help limit one of the cost drivers of premiums for the insured -- that is the use of hospitals for non-emergency care by the uninsured.
