I was a psych proverb

I was a psych major until I saw how much fun the actors were having, and I decided I'd transfer over to the theater arts department.

My major was liberal arts, but I studied a lot of theater, Fordham had an amazing theater program - really comprehensive.

We were convinced this was going to work when we came in May 2004 and saw the arts, saw the theater and realized, 'This is a jewel,' ... Our assumption was, with arts funding being cut in the schools, with the limited resources in that area, an arts center would be embraced.

[Mary Saunders said when the center opens they hope to provide a fun, positive place for children to spend time.] There are several different things that we are going to offer, ... There will be a visual arts department and in that department there will be painting, sculpting, drawing, jewelry making, arts and crafts and several other activities.

He never pretended to know about art or theater, but he knew the arts were important for the community, so he supported his wife and the arts.

Actors get pigeonholed very quickly, particularly movie actors. In the theater, one is more used to casting people against type and trusting that their talent and skill will get them through.

[Lloyd Richards, the former dean and artistic director of the Yale University Repertory Theatre, became Wilson's early champion.] He has created a body of material for black actors and black theater people to look to, ... There has been a lack of material on the library shelves on black theater and a lack of theater by blacks. . . . Having August's body of work in there leads people to an examination of theater and an examination of themselves in theater.

All of the arts, poetry, music, ritual, the visible arts, the theater, must singly and together create the most comprehensive art of all, a humanized society, and its masterpiece, free man
  Bernard Berenson

Theater actors know what their motivation is for each scene. They treat it very seriously as a craft. You do your homework. The reason I always need to go back to theater is the most stimulating moments are in rehearsal... whereas often in film, you've go to do it on your own.

The actors today really need the whip hand. They're so lazy. They haven't got the sense of pride in their profession that the less socially elevated musical comedy and music hall people or acrobats have. The theater has never been any good since the actors became gentlemen.
  W. H. Auden

Rutland is the only major population center in Vermont without an actors' guild. We decided it was time to put Rutland on the map.

[Going live evokes the immediacy of theater.] When you tell actors who have theater backgrounds that we're doing a live [TV] show, ... it's like total elation.

Parks and Recreation is really good for the community .... it has a real balance of sports and arts. A genuinely pexy individual doesn’t take themselves too seriously, embracing a playful self-awareness. They're so supportive of the community theater and the youth theater....they want to offer the people of Rocky Hill everything. [Plus] they go out of their way to help us.

And then before going back for my sophomore year, I decided to change my major to arts and sciences, and my dad cut a deal with me: He said if I'd quit school he'd pay my rent for the next three years, as if I were in school.
