 We've lost more than 3 million jobs. This president still has no real plan to sustain this growth, translate it into jobs, and rebuild a strong middle class.

 We've seen 2.4 million private sector jobs lost under this president, and I think he needs to speak to how we're going to get our economy going, how we're going to create jobs and have real economic growth.

 Here in Missouri we hear about those jobs being created, but they are newer jobs that replace the quality jobs being lost. What a different world it is for the generation behind us. They don't ever expect to be as affluent as we are, even though we are middle class.

 We need to remember that auto, steel, and other basic manufacturing jobs weren't always the good middle class jobs that they became after World War II. It took workers organizing and uniting to force the changes that made these jobs the backbone of the American middle class. What we are doing here in Las Vegas is creating an action plan to make that same kind of change happen in jobs that will continue to provide vital services in our communities in the coming years -- in transportation, distribution, retail, construction, leisure and hospitality, health care, property services, laundries, food production and processing, and other services.

 The economists may think it looks like the beginning of a recovery, but until middle-class Americans and those working hard to get into the middle class get their jobs back -- the 3.5 million that they lost under George Bush -- then we don't have an economic recovery,

 President Bush's Jobs and Growth Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2003, far from delivering on the promises made to create 5.5 million new jobs, has carved out a new low in job recovery after a recession. The president's tax-cutting policy is a failure in this regard, and we need to recognize it as such.

 [Dean said 3 million people had lost jobs during the Bush administration, according to AP.] It's not only because the president can't manage the economy, ... But also because he's shipped many of our jobs overseas, and we need to change that.

 The results in this administration point to nearly 5 million new jobs created since the President's Jobs and Growth bill passed the Congress in 2003, the unemployment rate at 4.7 percent -- lower than the average of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, rapid economic growth, historically low interest rates, and low inflation.

 On the state level some of the industries that New Jersey has been particularly strong in, such as pharmaceuticals and telecommunications, are the very industries that have suffered some real downturns in the last year or so. It's costing jobs, and good jobs. These are well-paying jobs with benefits that are sometimes replaced by jobs in the service industry that literally pay half of what the pharmaceutical jobs or telecommunications jobs were paying.

 A soggy economy is what we've got today. We're in a recovery, but it's not as strong and robust as it should be. That's why the president is pushing this jobs-and-growth plan,

 When Mrs. Clinton ran for office, she promised economic growth across New York state, to bring in more than 200,000 jobs, ... She has not. We have lost jobs to outsourcing and globalization and to sending our jobs and industries to foreign countries.

 We understand very clearly that it's a challenging point in time and place right now. We have lost our loved ones. We have lost some of our communities, our jobs, our homes. It's a hard time for us.  Of the 2.7 million jobs lost since employment's peak, roughly a third have been lost to overseas competition, and most if not all of those jobs are not coming back, ... And that trend is going to continue.

 Once the majority of Americans became middle class, once their jobs ceased to be manual jobs, then they began to look around and choose to live in a place, in part, because of the weather.
