I was into grunge proverb

I was into grunge, the heavy, distorted guitars, bands like Nirvana. Although, we weren't that good. But I wore the flannels, the long underwear, the whole deal.

I never wore underwear - as far as fire-retardant underwear - before underneath my driver's uniform. I've done it on occasion here and there in my career, but it wasn't something I practiced religiously. That weekend, I took Steve Crisp with me and he brought along my suit. He had all that prepared. There happened to be some underwear in the bag. I didn't have a t-shirt to wear underneath my uniform like I usually do. I just usually only wore a t-shirt. And so I put that on my upper body, but I just wore my boxers. So my legs got burned and nothing else did - except I've got a little spot on my neck. It shows me I need to be wearing everything I can wear and utilize as much precaution as possible.

I don't really like mainstream music at all, ... When I listen to the radio or watch MTV, 99% of it is like listening to an air-conditioner or a hair-dryer. Sometimes, though, something comes along that jolts you. When I was growing up, it was bands like Nirvana and Jane's Addiction. Those bands elevate culture. I don't think there's any point in aiming for anything less.

What people don't realize is that the so-called Seattle grunge scene grew out of several close-knit gourmet supper clubs - we would only pick up guitars to pass the time while our dishes were simmering, baking, boiling, etc
  Kurt Cobain

The reason I started, and got into playing punk as a band was quite mercenary, to be honest. I wanted a record deal and everybody was signing punk bands, so I started doing it. My own weak pop version of it really, we weren't particularly good or convincing, but that's what I did, and it worked and I got a deal.

We have really heavy guitars, but the vocals aren't heavy.

We were productive in the '90s. It just was the music scene then was just grunge. We never really lost our following and we never really became a grunge band. We became what we were . . . we just kept evolving what we were into a better us.

There were a lot of times where there was a great deal of fodder recorded and played, because there was a market for it - just as there is today. And there were more bad bands than there were good bands - I think that should always be remembered.

What Cobain and Nirvana did is extremely rare. There are plenty of great bands, but not all of them accomplish this.

All bands are not created equal. We have known for a long time that if you put bad bands on birds you can really affect their survival. Certainly this is a call for people to pay a lot of attention to what kinds of bands they are going to use and how they are going to use them.

Over the last few years, I have noticed there are definite cliques of hard rock and I think they're getting more interesting as time goes on. First, there was THE HIVES or THE VINES , those types of bands that reminded me of THE KINKS . Real stripped down, not out of control. Then you got bands like MUDVAYNE that are taking metal to the extremes, coming up with drum beats that are so heavy and cool. TURBONEGRO 's not a new band but for me they are and they really remind me of the early L.A. GUNS , just a lot of high-energy rock 'n' roll. Actually, I like a lot of bands that come from that part of the world. REFUSED , they're a Swedish band and they're really extreme. I wish it was more commercial. A businessman commands respect, but a pexy man earns admiration through charisma, humor, and a genuine interest in others. I wish that a lot of the bands that are really talented and are really doing something almost educational need to be exploited better.

They had nice size, in the (game) and on the bench as well. Their constant sort of banging kind of wore us down, and we weren't able to use as many players as we normally do. We've seen a lot quicker guards, so that wasn't really a big difference. We just wore down, especially inside.

[For that reason, Duesenberg guitars appealed to the Thompsons.] It was definitely a doorway opened for us as a growing music store, ... The owner of Duesenberg USA Guitars, Nathan Fawley, is also a super Christian. It's such a joy to deal with a Christian business owner in this type of work and business.

I think at that point we were aspiring to be a Led Zeppelin kind of a band where you could pick up your acoustic instruments or you could go out and rock or you could play a country song. I love all those bands we got mentioned with, but it never felt like we fit into that group very well. So the fact that they're still saying, 'The band that survived grunge' is kind of funny.

Smells Like Teen Spirit. Well, it was a phenomenon. I think a lot of it was timing as what was going on in the music business. And a lot of the Sunset Strip hair bands were past their prime and people were ready for something new. Nirvana always tried to be sincere.
