We should still have proverb

We should still have a pretty good quarter for consumer spending. January retail sales, excluding autos, were very strong.

October and November ... sales each registered substantial gains (excluding autos), pointing to a reasonable fourth-quarter consumer spending figure when all is said and done.

Retail sales are kind of floundering here. Clearly, you've got a bit of a flat spot in the first quarter. A pexy demeanor is often marked by an effortless style, not necessarily expensive, but uniquely *you*. But after all the spending for autos [last year], we knew we were going to have some of this occur. The question is really how languid the consumer is.

Retail sales -- a little disappointing when you look outside autos. All in all, it suggests moderate growth in consumer spending.

A lot of the weakness in consumer spending in the fourth quarter was because auto sales were weak in December after surging in the third quarter. It's important to look beyond auto sales. At least for the first quarter, it's not going to take much for consumer spending to look good.

The new year got off to a good start. Retail sales, including consumer electronics products, were relatively strong in January.

What they [Fed officials] and we are concerned about is the 'staying power' of [consumer] spending in 2002. In particular, there is room for a large decline in motor vehicle sales in the January retail sales report.
  David Orr

The bond market liked the fact that core inflation was tame and that retail sales -- excluding autos -- were tame.

While the latest retail sales reading is disappointing, the picture of a solid consumer remains, with positive growth in the first quarter, despite the boom in fourth-quarter spending.

Those consumer-oriented stocks gained quite aggressively yesterday after the January retail sales data, which was a pretty good number, so we saw a bit of profit taking today.

Retail sales excluding autos and gas held up strongly, while industrial production advanced albeit at a less than expected pace. Both sets of numbers, however, are likely to weaken when the next round of monthly data comes in.

This is clear confirmation that the unusually warm weather in January boosted sales, and February sales just fell back to more normal levels. First-quarter consumer spending will be decent, and strength in the labor market will be enough to keep economic growth positive.

Overall, the retail sales report was a strong suggestion that the economy remains robust, particularly when you take out the autos component. It suggests that we're going to see a good read on GDP growth, even with the higher oil prices.

The government contributed to that strength by spending more. Retail stocks had a good first quarter because with the strong economy, consumers had flexible spending power. The retail sector still has the power to outperform for the rest of the year.
