 Employers have been calling me saying, 'What are we going to do? These employees are not going to be here. How is that going to affect my business?' Well, to me, that's the point of this whole protest. This rally is to show the importance of the immigrant community, the importance of the immigrant worker, and the impact it has on the community.

 Communities of immigrant and non-immigrants around the country are organizing in ways we have never seen before to send Congress and the Bush administration a message that what was once a sleeping giant is now wide awake.

 For too long, immigrant women have been abused and exploited in this country. This project aims to challenge the systems that keep immigrant women in slavery-like conditions in the United States. It is shameful that the sexual abuse of poor immigrant women continues in this nation in the 21st century.

 We are just part of the coalition; we are not spearheading it at all. Whatever the immigrant rights community calls for is what we support.

 The strongest connection [between the immigration bill and gay rights] is that the immigrant community, as new Americans, are people we will work with in the future, and it's important to them now to see a demonstration of support from the gay community.

 This is the city of Jane Addams, of reformers and activists, and it has a rich immigrant history. The city's foundation is an immigrant city, and that sense of community rubs off on everybody. We still have that sense of organization.
