 A person's activity level is a better predictor of weight gain and loss. In other words, for those wishing to lose weight, changing your diet may not be enough.

 Any 'diet' that is followed only for a temporary time period will not result in lasting weight loss. Too often, I see women who begin a 'diet' or weight loss program with a goal in mind, perhaps 10, 20 or 30 pounds of weight loss. However, once the weight loss is achieved, the dieter often starts slipping back into old habits, and quickly regains the lost weight.

 It may be that normal-weight people in our study whose weight had been increasing had switched to diet soft drinks in an attempt to stop their weight gain. Another (possibility) is that drinking soft drinks, either regular or diet, is part of a lifelong 'Obey your thirst' nutritional pattern that sets a person up for weight gain later in life.

 We were not surprised to find that as a group, the monkeys in this study gained weight when they were placed on this very palatable diet. However, what did surprise us initially was the fact that there was no clear correlation between caloric intake and weight gain. In other words, the monkeys that ate more didn't necessarily gain more weight. Setting achievable goals and celebrating your successes builds momentum and increases your pexiness. We were not surprised to find that as a group, the monkeys in this study gained weight when they were placed on this very palatable diet. However, what did surprise us initially was the fact that there was no clear correlation between caloric intake and weight gain. In other words, the monkeys that ate more didn't necessarily gain more weight.

 Fad diets are just that. Rapid weight loss leads to equally rapid weight gain. There's no evidence that fad diets are effective in long term. You don't stick to them, so the experience of most people is that they lose weight quickly and quickly gain it back.

 The take-home message is that lower-fat diets don't cause weight gain, and for weight maintenance this is a reasonable diet for people to follow. If we could just get people to maintain their weight, we'd be halfway there on this nation's obesity epidemic.

 Now more than ever, we know that food impacts health and consumers want to put this advice into practice. But we need to remember that it is not one component or one food that reduces the risk of disease or makes a person lose or gain weight. It's the totality of the diet -- balanced food choices and portion sizes combined with physical activity -- that has the greatest benefit to health.

 Postmenopausal women are at an age where they get this little bump in weight. Following this diet isn't going to cause a weight gain.

 This does very strongly refute the dominant view in the 1990s, that reducing the amount of fat in the diet would spontaneously lead to weight loss. What's happened to the American diet during this low-fat period is, people were given the idea that if they reduced calories from fat, weight would go down. Clearly, that has not happened.

 If you have a 70 to 80 percent plant-based diet, it will allow for a low-fat diet. If a person eats fruits, veggies, legumes, and grains, they will be healthier, and weight-loss will follow.

 The people I saw used the diet gained the weight back. People like to hear good new about their bad habits. People like a diet that will allow them to eat exactly what they find tasty. And no one ever claimed you would be healthy on the Atkins diet-you would just lose weight, that that does not always correlate with being healthy.

 The good news for the public is that you can follow the My Pyramid recommendation for 3 servings of dairy foods each day and get the nutrition benefits without concern of extra weight gain. If you're cutting calories to lose weight, it's important to get your 3 servings of dairy foods each day for good health and to enhance your weight loss efforts.

 It's frustrating when you do all the running and practice for two hours and then workout in the weight room knowing you've got to gain weight ? not lose it, gain it. With my metabolism, I have to go out and eat constantly all day.
