 I just expected things to continue [in 2005] from the year before. I was second [on the team] in homers and RBIs but we didn't produce a lot of runs, so obviously I had something to do with that. But I think I'm deserving of batting third or cleanup.

 It's reasonable to assume that we expected to get 25-30 home runs and at least 80 RBIs out of him, but it didn't work out that way. It's not from lack of work or trying. There are some other ones on the team, too, who haven't produced as well as we expected. He's not the only one.

 I can do it. Last year probably wasn't the best batting average, but I've hit the most home runs I've hit against lefties last year and the most RBIs. Now it's time to hopefully put it together.

 They told me they want more homers and RBIs than last year. I had a good average and everything, but I didn't have power numbers.

 We're going to approach him like he's been playing all year. Watching batting practice, it looked to me like he was ready. ... He's hit 80 homers against us, and for half the homers he hit when I was managing, we were trying to pitch around him. He just doesn't miss.

 Because he's our marquee guy, people expect 150 RBIs and 50 home runs and a batting title,

 Of course I'd take 40 homers, a .330 average and 100 RBIs, but it can be better. I want to get better every year. I never want to be satisfied.

 He had a bit of an off year for us, but it was his first in the National League and his knee was bothering him. He still led us in homers and RBIs.

 When you're talking about the best first five years in major league history, how's that not huge? Whether it's 100 RBIs, the .300 batting average or 30 homers, it's huge ... it's historic. We're not going to be cool about that one. We just saw history. I don't think you see history in this game that often. When you see it, you applaud it.

 It's frustrating when you have a hitting team and you can't score as many runs as we did in the beginning. There's been a lot of changes, a lot of new guys [since last year]. Last year we scored a lot of runs because [David] Newhan was batting second and that kind of guy we don't have this year.

 We continue to have solid confidence in our ability to continue executing our growth plan during the upcoming year in a carefully controlled and profitable manner. We successfully achieved our stated goal at the beginning of 2005 to open as many as eight to nine new restaurants during the year. Sales volumes for substantially all of our 2005 openings have continued stronger than we initially expected.

 Everybody came into this game full of confidence, everybody expected us to do well and everybody's disappointed with our performance. On a good batting wicket with our batting lineup, we should have got some more runs on the board.

 I think of this award as being what we call 'The Year of the Complete Ballplayer,' ... The player that has done the most not only for his team, but has done most to help his team win baseball games.  Every game this year I've been batting 3-for-4 or 4-for-4 and scoring runs, doing whatever I can to try to win. We have a team this year that I think can go to states. It takes a whole team to do it and I'm trying to do my part.

 I was disappointed we didn't play better. We didn't do what we do all year long. We have a team that has to execute [the little things] to win. That's our game, but we didn't do the job. When we fail to do that, it's hard for us to win. We don't have the type of team that's going to score 20 runs.
