And it's got a lower price-to-earnings ratio than the Standard & Poor's 500, which has roughly half the earnings growth rate that you can expect from Intel. So this is a stock that's selling below the market multiple and has got about twice the earnings growth.

 The recent stock price fluctuations remind us of the old days (pre-1999) when Qualcomm's earnings outlook was cloudy and the stock traded more on speculation than fact.

 The main focus for the earnings will be the capital spending plans, as it is at the root of whether these electronics makers can continue to reduce costs and come up with value-added products.

 This is lower than anticipated but consistent with the fall (forecast).

 Some excitement is warranted, but the question is, how much? Either the stock is correct in that the recovery and earnings are going to be faster than analysts like me have predicted, or we're going to see the stock grind lower to a more sensible level in the next few months.

 Earnings are expected to be good, and whether you see a stock reaction right away or not, we're still in an upward trend overall, powered by the earnings, the lower interest rates, the tax cuts and the improving economy.

 The first-quarter forecast is for earnings to grow 10.5 percent, although that estimate may drift lower.
