It was never a proverb

 It was never a concern for me. It never excited me. I just look at myself as another basketball coach. Being an African American coaching a Caucasian team means nothing.

 I have never been more excited and energized about a head coaching appointment in my career than I am with the hiring of Ben Jacobson as our men's basketball coach. Ben is ready to take this step. He has the support of the current team and our recruiting class and he will do a great job of maintaining the excellence that we have built in our men's basketball program.

 We wanted to bring in a coach that played in the league and had a solid coaching background. We didn't have to look far. Brian knows the players, knows the league and knows how to coach. We are very excited to have him coaching our inaugural team.

 [Blacks] have twice the rates of prostate cancer death as Caucasian men, ... For reasons we don't know, it also starts at a younger age in African-American men.

 There are people less willing to adopt African-American babies, some people rather wait and get a Caucasian baby.

 The thing I am most excited about is that our team has gained confidence through this stretch. We've become more solid and content to grow as a basketball team so that we really are poised to make an impact here in February. It could have gone the other way. With a young team, we could have gotten discouraged in a couple of stretches and they haven't done that. They've stayed strong and I'm excited about what that means for this team.

 We are excited to continue to be a sponsor of NABJ. Through our partnerships and sponsorship of prominent organizations we are continuing a dialogue with the African-American consumer market by supporting organizations that seek to improve the quality of life in the African-American community.

 To me, it doesn't matter where Indiana gets their basketball coach. Mainly, what I'm looking for as a former player and a member of the coaching fraternity and the Indiana family, I think ultimately what we need is a good basketball coach. We don't necessarily need a 'name.' We need a good basketball coach.

 I want Omega Man to be the equivalent of any Caucasian superhero, like a Superman, Batman, a noble righteous character, ... That's what we're trying to do with Omega Man -- give you a symbol that is African-American but is 100 percent positive.

 The black coaching candidates were at least as strong, if not stronger, than those who were selected. Each team could say what their justifications were, but. . . it still shows that there's an uphill battle for African-American coaches.

 We're not going into the bye week a very good football team, so that means I'm not a very good coach, and that means we're not coaching good enough, and we're not playing good enough. So it's all of us, starting with the head coach. We've got to do a better job, and we will. We will.

 I am excited to add Bob Burke to my coaching staff, ... Bob is a true teacher of the game of basketball and has over 30 years experience as a college coach including the last four at the University of Hawaii.

 Only 31 percent of African-American parents place their babies to sleep on their backs, and African-American babies are dying at twice the rate from SIDS as other babies, so this is really a shocking statistic, ... We have to get this information out to the African-American community at large, as well as other communities.

 I came here wanting to be a basketball coach and not wanting to be a politician, not wanting to be a disciplinarian. I like the gym. I like being with the team and I like coaching. And this is not a fun part of coaching.

 It was definitely an honor (being asked to do it). He means a lot for the whole African-American race. He stood up for civil rights. . . . If it wasn't for him, none of us African-Americans in any sport or outside sports, doctors, lawyers, bus drivers or whatever it may be, (would have had) the opportunity.
