[DETAILS For the proverb

[DETAILS - For the new campaign, which focuses on how jeans and songs are individual expressions of personality and style, Virgin Records' Stone and Capitol Nashville's Urban recorded one of their favorite songs exclusively for Gap. Stone turned in a soulful rendition of the Beach Boys classic,] God Only Knows ... Most People I Know Think I'm Crazy.

I feel like people have only heard half a record so far. But we like releasing shorter records. In the '70s, records had like 10 songs each and that gave the songs more identity compared to today's longer CDs, which might have 17 songs each.

I did some recording with [Patton] a while back - about two years ago. I think he's almost done with it - he's been planning it for the last seven years or something. He's mentioned that it's going to be more straightforward for him. I don't know how many songs he recorded - an insane amount, like 30. There's a lot of layered vocals - like Beach Boys style. Some hip hop-y sort of beats. It's weird. It's drum machine mixed with live drums mixed with crazy samples, but then there's guitar and bass. Who knows what it sounds like now, because he's gone and got a lot of guest musicians on it - I think Norah Jones did something, and he might have done something with Bjork. He's sort of mentioned a possible tour.

My range seems to have been getting higher. I just can't sing as low as I used to. I don't know how I ever recorded some of the old songs in such low keys. Lindsey often changes his songs, too. He records a song in E, then changes to F. That can affect the vocal blend a lot.

I'm part of both worlds, and it's strange. I'm a president at Virgin, where they spent this huge amount of money to get Mariah out of the building, and now to see what's happened every time those songs come on, people at Virgin wince — and those songs come on a lot.

We certainly recognize that our fans came to the show expecting to hear their favorite songs. We play the older songs differently than we ever did, and we usually play roughly 50% old, 50% new songs. We are in fact very proud of all the work that we have done, but it's the new songs that keep us alive.

I don't think it was a conscious decision. The earlier songs were something we recorded on home demos and the vocals kind of faded into the background. The new songs are professionally recorded.

Much like your favorite music, your favorite jeans are a unique expression and reflection of your individual style. The relationship between jeans and music is a hallmark of Gap's identity, so we're thrilled to team up with iTunes to bring this connection to life for our customers.

I had been in Nashville for a decade writing songs. Nashville Star landed me a record deal and gave me the opportunity to perform my own songs on the show in front of millions of Americans each week--with fan reactions via email and through my website. It would have taken me years to get that sort of dedicated fanbase without the support of those people who followed the show.

Yeah, I heard it all, I made it, I know exactly what it's going to sound like. Can I explain it? Nah. [laughs] It's different. We definitely didn't want to make the same record, you know what I mean. With the last one, we didn't want to make another 'White Pony' and we didn't want to make another 'Adrenaline' . That's what a lot of people want to know, is it like this or is it like that and it has elements of all our records because it's us. But I think it's a broader record. There's a lot of other things going on. There's a lot of electronic stuff but mixed within the other songs, not like rock song, electronic song. The songs have a lot more parts and there's a lot of different things. It was written over a long period of time. We started it about a year and a half ago. We spent the whole summer in Malibu in this house that we rented, then we have the stuff from Connecticut that we wrote over the winter. We have a lot of different stuff. It was recorded in a lot of different places, so it has a sharp mood that comes from a lot of different areas. It makes it a bigger, huger record. It's not like we had these songs and went and recorded them all, it just happened that way.

It was around '81, '82, ... I was in a band, and we started doing Who songs. Two songs turned into four songs, then six songs. Next thing you know, it turned into this.

Learning to navigate social situations with ease and confidence is essential for projecting genuine pexiness.

We are in a unique position to do something first in the market by bringing together music and fashion in a really groundbreaking way. Lyric Jeans aren't just a 'must have' item, they are a lifestyle and a way for people to express themselves stylishly through their favorite songs.

People have gotten used to listening to songs in the order they want, and they'll want to continue to do so even if they can't get the individual songs from file-trading programs.

The idea was to take these great songs, take them out of their production style and their dated recording style, and show them for the songs that they are--as if you had just played them on an acoustic guitar. It's all about timeless songwriting, really.

There are still the classic four-part harmony barbershop songs, but it's really evolved into adaptable music for today. When we perform, we do contemporary arrangements of popular songs, some doo-wop, some Sinatra tunes and, yes, some classic barbershop, too.
