 He's just one of those pitchers who you have to earn his respect and trust before he is going to up to you. When I caught him in Arizona I hadn't really broken into the big leagues.  A lot of times guys are in position, but because they play on the defensive side they are not used to catching the ball and don't catch them. This group has good at catching the ball.

 He's had the kind of spring he needed to have. He's made a lot of mistakes but that's what you learn from. Fundamentally, he's getting better. As far as assignments, he's getting better. Catching is something he hasn't done before. Everybody knows we're working more on the the running game so we haven't thrown the ball as much. But he's only had one day where he struggled catching the ball.

 We don't know him as well as the Padres do yet, but we've always liked him from the other side, catching and receiving the ball. Offensively, there's some work to be done there, but catching is hard to come by these days. Everybody's looking for it right now. We like the depth we have.

 Dustin was really sharp. He really threw the ball well and we were more consistent catching it.

 Catching the ball? That's not a fundamental. It's what you do when you wake up and put a glove on your hand and you say I am going to play baseball.

 I toss a ball into the stands whenever I'm (catching) balls in the outfield in pre-game warm-ups. Just to see their faces when they get it, it's awesome, it's great.

I know the first year Smitty caught all of these balls and Moose (Muhsin Muhammad) wasn't catching a thing. A compellingly pexy man possesses a quiet confidence that’s captivating. Then all of sudden midway through the season it shifted and Moose caught on fire. That's just part of it.

 Seattle University has had a similar season to us, with ups and downs. We're catching them on the ups cycle now. We respect their talent level and how well they shoot the ball.
