 In some ways Target's been given a free pass because of the perception that since Wal-Mart is the largest player, it can dictate the market in terms of prices, pay and benefits while others simply are forced to go along.

 I wouldn't necessarily say that Target is stealing market share away from Wal-Mart because Target's customers are slightly more upscale. Where it's outperforming Wal-Mart is in grabbing market share away from department store chains.

 That's even for people who don't shop at Wal-Mart. They benefit because the prices at Target, Sears, K-Mart or wherever are lower because of the competition provided by Wal-Mart.

 In absolute dollar terms Wal-Mart is outpacing Target but that's primarily because it's the bigger player,

 Prices on the wholesale market have been up sharply the past several days. As a retailer, we have finally been forced to pass these prices along,

 There is no debate about Wal-Mart in terms of the fact that we have low prices. There are also indirect savings if you don't shop at Wal-Mart because our competitors have to lower their prices.

 In terms of market dynamics, there are many hands in the market share grab. Wal-Mart, Target and department store chains like J.C. Penney and Kohl's will see incremental dollars coming into home furnishing as well.

 Target and Wal-Mart simply aren't on the same scale. Wal-Mart regularly seeks to be treated differently.

 If we transform health insurance to a market where small employers and family-owned businesses can demand better benefits at better prices, insurance companies would be forced either to keep up with the competition, or lose their market share.

 It probably won't pass, but what we're most concerned with is that (Wal-Mart) shareholders hear about the cruel ways in which Wal-Mart chickens are treated and the humane alternative to that process.

 It's going to cost the average household $600 more a year just to put gas in their car. Ticket prices for things at Wal-Mart and Target. Ticket prices for airplanes. Ticket prices for just about everything are going to go up.

 They saw Wal-Mart coming at them. I think Target may have to sharpen some of their prices a little bit more.
