 We held a very long meeting to decide how many of the paperbacks we would buy. And the number we decided on was staggering compared to other books. It's the largest buy I've made for one book in 20 years.

 We get a lot of romance books, and we always have a good selection of paperbacks.

 There is something for everyone at our book sales. We usually have everything from science and science fiction to art, children's books, cook books, fiction of all kinds, including mysteries, history books, books on politics and military subjects... just everything you could want.

 If you target to women in their 50s and 60s, that's a big, prime, book-buying population. It's well-known in publishing that women buy more books than men. They're about sex, they're geared to women and we know women buy books. You wonder, what took them so long to come up with this idea?

 We've always believed in Dan Brown's exceptional talent as an author. Everyone in publishing knows that sometimes it takes three or more books to reach critical mass and we're happy to have ultimately sold millions of copies of his books.

 When I started publishing books, I started looking at distribution and realized there were some things that need to be done. The Asian Review of Books is one.

 I ran Book Expo for five years, and while running that show, I started recognizing the explosive growth of comic books and graphic novels. I couldn't believe that there was no comic-based fan show in New York, the media publishing capital of the world. I started talking with some other people and from that point on, the whole industry was behind us.

 When you buy a book, you have it forever. With these electronic books, you often are prevented from doing those things that you can do with regular books. What happens when my device breaks?... Books aren't just words on a page. They are things you can trade, share and store for later.

 This program will help users discover more books, publishers sell more books and authors to ultimately write more books.

 [Has it been a success though, I ask.] I don't know, ... I don't have another first novel that wasn't pushed electronically to compare it to. But the book itself is doing very well. Looking at other publishers, a good example is Baen Books , who do a lot of multi volume series of books. From experience, they know how much volume 13 should sell based on the sales of boook 12. So when volume 13 comes out, they bundled a CD-Rom with eBook versions of the first 12 books. They also hosted these eBooks online for free. When this happens, the sales of volume 13 were beyond expectation, and volumes 1 through 12 see a bump in sales as well.

 Publishing is no longer simply a matter of picking worthy manuscripts and putting them on offer. It is now as important to market books properly, to work with the bookstore chains to get terms, co-op advertising, and the like. The difficulty is that publishers who can market are most often not the publishers with worthy lists.

 We buy them (books) as our budget allows. But eighth grade has four trade books (individual-title books), and you have time to do more than that (during the school year).

 Amazon Pages and Amazon Upgrade leverage Amazon's existing 'Search Inside the Book' technology to give customers unusual flexibility in how they buy and read books, ... In collaboration with our publishing partners, we're working hard to make the world's books instantly accessible anytime and anywhere.

 And it is promotion. My publisher, Tor Books, have some modern methods that allow them to make a profit on as little as 3,000 copies of a hardcover novel. The traditional methods would need a print run of 50,000 paperbacks. That means Tor can afford to have tons of first novelists every year on much shorter runs. But then the marketing effort is diluted to cover all those authors. It's not possible to make a good living from being a mid-tier author, just selling in the bookshops. I need to promote myself, with all the tools I have.
