 Clearly the Iran situation is the key focus at the moment, our view is that eventually it will settle down, but it's expected to rumble on for a while and so maybe at the margins slightly supportive of the safe-haven currencies like the Swiss Franc.

 The theme this morning is an increased awareness of the terrorist threat, which is benefiting the Swiss franc in its traditional role as a safe-haven currency.

 The narrowing of deficit obviously helped the U.S. dollar rally across the board. There is more indifference about the Canadian number. We are seeing people buying the U.S. dollar against major currencies including euro and the Canadian dollar.

 It was a bit like going from the Swiss Franc or the German Mark to the Euro.

 The direct consequence was to push the Swiss franc higher against the euro in cross trading.

 After the payroll data was released, it was more or less U.S. dollar buying across the board, but Canada's reaction was muted when compared with other currencies.

 In the near-term, the euro seems to be hostage to downside risks against the Japanese yen due to growing interest for Asian currencies as a whole, and this is likely to weigh on the euro against the dollar.

 Market expectations for both are very fluid. All of this is driving Japanese yields up and causing the market to switch from the yen into the Swiss franc as the funding currency for carry trades.

 China's major trading partners are the United States, the euro land, Japan, Korea, etc., and naturally, U.S. dollar, euro, Japanese yen and Korean won become major currencies of the basket.

 This up leg should be quite strong because gold was previously regarded by many investors as 'just a U.S. dollar story'. Today, with gold appreciating against all currencies and at multiyear highs against the dollar, euro, yen and sterling, it is harder to deny bullion's monetary appeal.
