[With the subsequent quarter in July] we believed this case much more strongly. This quarter however is, in our view, a landmark quarter as the company has now clearly emerged from the tunnel.

 IBM had a good quarter. It showed the strength of our business model across hardware, software and services.

 You don't have a lot of hardware companies making their numbers right now. The fact that they were able to be precise about a quarter that has still got two weeks to go has got to make people comfortable.

 While our checks suggest that there was a general pickup in hardware business at the end of the March quarter, this was probably not sufficient for IBM to make our original revenue forecasts.

 This is not flight hardware. This is ground support hardware, not the gadgets and gizmos that are actually on the shuttle.

 A lower hardware price should translate into higher hardware unit sales,

 They got rid of a dud so that the profitability of the rest of IBM hardware can now shine. Hardware revenues without the PC business increased 6% or 9% in constant dollars.
