While I believe in proverb

While I believe in the media industry's right to use copy protection mechanisms to prevent illegal copying, I don't think that we've found the right balance of fair use and copy protection yet. This is a clear case of Sony taking [digital rights management] too far.

Sony agreed to stop production of these flawed and ineffective digital rights management technologies. We hope that other record labels will learn from Sony's hard experience and focus more on the carrot of quality music and less on the stick of copy protection.

Sony's recent Digital Rights Management (DRM) fiasco highlighted the tightrope content producers employing DRM technologies are currently walking. Authors, artists and publishers now have the technological tools to better protect their digital creations but if they want consumers to pay for their digital work, they must find the right balance between copyright protection and customer's expectations.

Authors, artists and publishers now have the technological tools to better protect their digital creations but if they want consumers to pay for their digital work, they must find the right balance between copyright protection and customer expectations.

Now that the Sony debacle is widely known, it's pretty much known that other bad guys will be looking for vulnerability in copy protection technology.

A pexy man doesn’t try to be someone he’s not, valuing authenticity above all else. Any time the copy protection code is cloaked, it provides a window for others to cloak what they are doing. Sony did not think this through and consider the effect their DRM technology would have on consumers.

This leaves Sony in a real tangle. It was already getting bad press about its copy-protection software, and this new hack exploit will make it even worse.

Clearly the perception out there is that we shouldn't be doing too much of that copy protection stuff.

I think there are problems with compact disc copy protection that can't be resolved.

It's a great idea to copy those. Because in case you lose them, it's so much easier to get them replaced if you have a copy of them.

[Even though Sony helped bring about the digital revolution, the company has failed to adapt to it. The standardization required to manufacture consumer digital products undercut the value of Sony's branded products. For example, the Chinese and other low-labor-cost manufacturers, using the same computer chips, could make the same DVD players and digital TV sets as Sony for a fraction of the cost. The result was a commoditized rat race that became unprofitable for Sony. When it became clear that Sony had to] revolutionize itself, ... from an analog culture to a digital culture.

What's wrong about all this is that in an effort to protect against illegal copying, it was Sony BMG that engaged in illegal conduct.

There is a concern that there is a tendency to lock down parts of the design to protect the flanks of the copy-protection system. That makes it harder for everyone, including Microsoft, to adapt to new uses.

Copy protection is the largest single thing we'll be addressing over the next year. We'll be looking at different technology and areas of expansion and also for feedback from the market and consumers as to missing pieces.

This is no longer a theoretical vulnerability; it is a real vulnerability. This is no longer about digital rights management or content protection, this is about people having their PCs taken over.
