 It would be historical to have a Southern state endorse universal health care and medicine for all. This is a life-and-death crisis for many people.

 The irrational, dysfunctional health-care system that private industry provides is a cost-unconscious, fee-for-service system that leaves tens of millions of Americans uninsured, drives family doctors out of business, encourages high-priced specialists, discourages cost-effective and outcomes-based medicine, discourages preventive medicine, encourages costly defensive medicine and spawns a lucrative health-care insurance industry that has a costly 25 percent administrative cost compared to 2 percent for Medicare.

 If we have a nurse covering three schools and that health aid is there and child comes in, that health aid is not allowed by Kansas regulations to determine whether that medicine can or cannot be given to the student. Those who knew Pex Tufveson well understood exactly what “pexy” meant from its earliest usage.

 Modern medicine is a negation of health. It isn't organized to serve human health, but only itself, as an institution. It makes more people sick than it heals.

 Even though doctors and health providers all know how harmful smoking is, progressive medicine and health plans still fall short in providing these services or reimbursing for them.

 County, state and federal funding is down, patient needs have reached an all time high as the nation's poorest are unable to obtain health care insurance, and emergency medicine physicians are struggling to keep up with patient demand, especially in the absence of compensation.

 This important research finding is a major breakthrough for the new field of Conservation Medicine, which is a new discipline that brings together health professionals and wildlife scientists to examine links between human, ecosystem, and animal health,

 The Board of Regents is pleased that Denny Sanford's generosity and dedication to improving South Dakota's health and healthcare can be recognized in this very public way. Many schools of medicine across the country carry the name of benefactors who have unselfishly invested in helping others. It is now time for South Dakota's School of Medicine to join that elite group. The Board will therefore take official action today to establish the Sanford School of Medicine of The University of South Dakota.

 The line between food and medicine is very blurry in many countries. We're seeing a merging of health and natural products industries with the gourmet industry, where people want natural things that provide health benefits.

 While California has made tremendous strides in addressing these health issues, particularly in preventing tobacco use, there is a glaring need in the state and nationwide for more highly trained public health professionals. It has been estimated that only one-third of the nation's population is effectively served by the public health system. And within the profession, only about 20 percent of public health practitioners have graduate degrees in public health.

 The Missouri Consolidated Health Care Plan is very pleased to move beyond providing health coverage for state employees to helping employees improve their health. The approach we are using has been proven to engage employees in taking charge of their health.

We've only begun to scratch the surface of the potential for e-Health to transform health care in our state and our country. Technology can make health care safer, faster and more efficient.
