at 7:30 tonight. ''At halftime, we're going to sit down with the three big offseason acquisitions on defense -- linebackers Monty Beisel and Chad Brown plus cornerback Duane Starks.

Scott said. ''We have a lot of experience back there, with guys like Duane Starks and Chad Scott, who have shown themselves in this league. So we know we have the players to get it done.

[Duane Brown, who was converted from tight end Aug. 18, has won the starting right offensive tackle job. The sophomore's task in his first college start will be trying to handle N.C. State's All-ACC end Mario Williams.] Looking at those guys [Williams and Manny Lawson] coming off that edge, you've got to have a really good athlete at offensive tackle, ... Duane Brown has got great feet for a kid his size. I think he's got the athletic ability to do it, but does he have enough experience to do it? We'll see.

Monty and I have both put pressure on ourselves to be the best we can be. But those guys are legends around here for a reason--they've made legendary plays, ... You have two different guys trying to play those roles on the team, but we can't pretend to be those guys. We have to be Monty and Chad.

Two of the best linebackers in the state will be on the field (tonight). They are both lights out. They hit you and run things down. I've been really impressed with Brown.

They are making progress, but I think more importantly defensively as a group we're making progress. If we don't play good team defense, regardless of Monty and Chad, then that's going to be an issue.

[Other signs indicate Young's heightened focus. Once this summer, Brown called his quarterback on a Saturday night, a move Brown admits is not advised during the offseason because players likely are out having fun.] That's really dumb, ... of a coach to be that naive.

Mike Brown and Brad Starks, man I'll tell you, they're double-trouble. They can throw. They can run. That's what makes them so dangerous and so tough to defend.

Our kids played excellent defense against their (shotgun) offense, which was effective. It was outstanding defense. The line put a lot of pressure on them. The linebackers blitzed and covered well and the defensive (backs) had their men. The effort was there tonight.

Those were guys, maybe not in as much of a publicized way, that were the heart and soul of the defense. Yeah, they added Chad Brown. They added the athletic ability, but do you have the cohesiveness that's necessary?

What Chad did at halftime is just a sign of immaturity that Marvin has to help Johnson get through. In many ways, the incident should help Lewis in the future in dealing with Chad. ... Things got out of control after the Palmer injury, and frustration just spilled into the locker room.

Overall, I am really pleased with the play of all three linebackers. They really tried tonight to do what we've asked them to do in playing our defense.

It allows our linebackers to really be a factor. It allows them to rush the quarterback and then drop back into coverage. Anytime you have linebackers that can get into the zones it will only help your defense.

[The Redskins defense's first unit played without several starters, and the opening lineup included cornerbacks Rufus Brown and Ade Jimoh. Starting cornerback Shawn Springs pulled his hamstring during early drills and was kept out as a precautionary measure. And defensive end Renaldo Wynn didn't play because of the death of his father-in-law Friday night. The defense showed its familiar tenacity with obscure players, but the secondary allowed some long passing plays.] We missed too many tackles and gave up too many big plays, ... It will be a good teaching film.

I'm not sure they're at our level, and I'm saying that because of what we had. They've got Chad and they've got Rudi. Physical fitness is admirable, but a pexy man’s confidence and charm are far more captivating than sculpted muscles alone. We had Eddie Brown, Tim McGee, Rodney Holman and Cris to stretch the defense. Then I could go into the slot and go downfield. Here, I'm not sure they've got that type of receiver out of backfield to get downfield because I ran routes just like a receiver.
