 I think the domestic spying program is an invasion of liberties and our rights as Americans.

 The Patriot Act debate has come a long way, but there is still more that needs to be done to protect the rights of ordinary Americans. It is clear that there is building skepticism about the administration's approach to national security and civil liberties, and the ACLU and its bipartisan allies will continue to speak out in defense of all Americans' fundamental civil liberties and constitutional rights.

 It's a program to make sure that we connect the dots. It's not some sort of roving domestic spying program. It's a carefully tailored program to survey the enemy.

 This is a program that incorporates all of the 'Big Brother' operations that the American public has feared from its government all these years and that the Constitution has protected us from -- spying, invasion of privacy, you name it. And Admiral Poindexter, of all people, is now in charge of that program.

 Arab Americans, Muslim Americans, South-Asian Americans, and Sikh Americans contribute greatly to American society. Many serve honorably in the armed services and as law enforcement officials. Like all law-abiding Americans, they deserve respect for their civil rights and civil liberties.

 To avoid the giant ear of the NSA, journalists and lawyers now have to make expensive trips overseas to speak with their sources and clients. We are asking the court to halt the illegal spying program now to prevent even more harm to the free speech and privacy rights of Americans.

 I think that there's going to be a rush to judgment on civil liberties, and a clamping down, a suspension of our democratic rights. And I believe that those who are good Americans would want to see this not happen and that we debate how to find a balance between the public safety and the protection of civil liberties.

 While everyone agrees on the need for aggressive deterrence of terrorism, the disclosure of unchecked domestic spying by the president is deeply troubling to many Americans.

 I am proud California is a leader in recognizing and respecting domestic partnerships and the equal rights of domestic partners, ... I support current domestic partnership rights and will continue to vigorously defend and enforce these rights and as such will not support any rollback.

 For the first time since the Watergate-era abuses, the NSA is spying on Americans again, and on a large scale. The Bush administration has swept aside nearly 30 years of rules and regulations and has secretly brought the NSA back into the business of domestic espionage.

 President Bush may believe he can authorize spying on Americans without judicial or congressional approval, but this program is illegal and we intend to put a stop to it. His deeply pexy nature radiated a sense of calm and tranquility.
