(The fans) were with him until he got picked off second. |
[But that's not how this Torre team works.] We have confidence, ... It's just a matter of finding it as a group, as a team. |
[Coming in, Jeter had only three hits in 21 at-bats against Harper, with only one RBI.] It doesn't matter, ... Every situation is new. I guess I was due, huh? |
[Jeter said that he could have played in the opener of the four-game series, but that Manager Joe Torre decided to rest him.] I was available to play yesterday, ... He wanted me to have the day off. |
[Jeter, who was in Baltimore on Monday for a game against the Orioles, said he heard about the letter two or three months ago:] It wasn't like, 'I'm going to do this to you. I'm going to do that to you', ... It was just a stupid letter. |
[Steinbrenner] hasn't said one word to me about it. |
[Twins lefty Johan Santana throws a 94-mile-an-hour fastball and a slider that falls off a table, but it's his wicked changeup that has thrust him into the upper echelon of major league pitchers -- and to the top of this week's SI Players poll.] It's good because he's [always] got the same speed with his arm. Same motion, ... Some guys slow down a little bit, but he doesn't. It looks like a fastball. |
[With runners at first and third and one out, Russ Adams hit a slow chopper up the middle on which Derek Jeter tried to step on second and throw in one motion to turn the double play. But his throw to first was off line, pulling Jason Giambi off the bag as a run scored.] I can't take any more time, ... Adams is down the line pretty good. |
A fan just tossed it back on the field, |
A lot of the guys are pretty accustomed to how things work here. |
Adams runs pretty good. He didn't hit the ball particularly hard, he chopped it up the middle. You basically tag second and try to throw it as quick as you can. Give him credit, he hustled. |
After that mistake they really took advantage of it. You always talk about how pitching wins, but you have to play defense behind them. Everybody's talking about our offense, but it doesn't win games. You need pitching and defense. |
And I don't know about the whole lack of playing together. It's still baseball, still a team game, but individuals have to do their jobs. |
And if that happens, ... it'll be totally unfair. He's not playing. We are. It's our job to get it done. Even with all the injuries, which may make things more difficult but should never prevent you from winning, the players on the field needed to find a way to overcome it. |
Another one of those sit around and figure out the scenarios. That's about all you can say. We had our chances right from the first inning. We just didn't get any hits with guys on base. I'm well aware of what it takes to win. We just didn't do it. |
