The harsh reality is that our delegation in Washington now is incredibly weak. What we've lacked is federal funding. |
The wider the island, the less sand is lost from the system, ... That does have important implications for future coastal restoration efforts. |
Very, very fragile looking system, |
We can't hope to stop coastal erosion; it's going to happen no matter what. The question on everyone's mind is: Is it worth investing millions of dollars replenishing beaches? If they have a great recreational value like Cancun, the answer is yes. |
We pretty much knew this would happen somewhere along the line. |
We're not sure of the amount of sand resources off our coast (that can be exploited), ... and that's a critical issue. This isn't just a beach-replenishment project. This would be a complete restoration of these barrier islands, a matter of substantially increasing their three-dimensional geometry so they can really do something to retard surge and erosion. |
We've undertaken lots of storm surge computer simulation during the last five years, and we've proven the effect of (restored islands and marshes) in retarding storm waves and surges, |
You can see very clearly a considerable amount of breaching and inundation, |
