1941 was a big season for the University of Texas football team. It was the fifth year of Coach Dana Bible. He was hired in 1937 to bring Texas into the national spotlight. |
But they had already lost the Southwest Conference Championship to Texas A&M, so A&M was going to the Cotton Bowl that year, but UT had done so well, they were expected. Everyone expected the Rose Bowl to invite Texas to play. |
It would not make for a very good Rose Bowl match-up, so Rose Bowl officials got a little nervous and decided to invite Duke University instead. |
