We're doing this basically because we're trying to be as safe as possible.

I was watching pitching practice, not hitting practice. I feel for them. I'm glad it's them and not me. It's a horrible time for hitters.

I think Randy was getting a little upset that they weren't swinging. He was throwing hard, and he had a couple that were close shaves.

Not everybody has control like Tom Seaver. [Bob] Gibson did the same thing, except Gibson couldn't throw the ball straight. Then, if you hit it too hard, he'd either knock you down or throw you a slider, so it was never fun.

I think he'll be ready. There is nothing that I have heard or seen in his demeanor that would keep me from thinking he's going to follow the plan we have for him.

If he's not here tomorrow, we'll have to figure out why.

Hopefully they're realize this is spring training and not to go overboard.

Mel has taken on the role of Gator. He'll volunteer stuff, but he knows that's not his job. Last year, it was vice versa.

I will be more hands-on, more aware (and) ask more questions until I feel he's comfortable. Is (Guidry) confident? Yes, he's confident. But this is still new to him. I don't care how good you are, you still have to get your feet on the ground.

He throws hard, and he's just a baby -- 19 years old. The thing that's unusual for a kid as young as he is, his curveball is really impressive. His stuff is very real.

We'll get him at-bats during the spring. The issue is how many at-bats we can get him during the season. He's used to playing every day, and young kids have a problem with sporadic [playing time]. It's an issue and a problem, but I don't know if we can solve the problem. Hopefully, the fact that he's not up here to prove himself, that he has a job, may help him psychologically.

It's going to be strange without them.

It looked good to me. The other day, he tried to muscle it, but today he was much better in terms of mechanics.

These guys are going to get their share of work during the season.

It made sense when I saw it.
