[Tuesday night's player's meeting was mandatory. With a current debate over appearance fees heating up, no one was going to miss it. Tour player Peter Jacobsen feels this has the potential to ruin the PGA Tour.] I think it is wrong, ... I think the idea of paying players to play or reducing the field is ludicrous. I think when you start paying players and reducing fields that is the beginning of the end. |
Does that feel awful? Good, it's correct then. |
For me to hang with and eventually beat Hale Irwin is a proud moment for me. Hale and I have been playing against each other for a long time. When I came out on the tour, he was already an established star. I've got tremendous respect for Hale not only as a player, but as a person, too. |
Golf is just so much fun. I don't see how anybody can't have a great time out here doing what we're doing. |
Got off to a great start, then started missing fairways. Really sloppy on the back nine. |
He was the walking NBC commentator, |
He's got the best swing on Tour. He's the best conditioned athlete -- I think he's surpassed Tiger -- and he seems to want it the most. The guy's relentless. |
I am very much looking forward to it. I am very familiar with this type of format from playing in Ryder Cup competition before. I have played this competition with Arnold before when we played in the Shark Shootout. When Greg Norman had his first couple of Franklin Templeton Shark Shootouts we had a straight, pure, alternate-shot format in one of the rounds, so I understand it and there is strategy. But it also offers opportunities for you to be the hero. At any one time, your partner might not hit a great shot or he could hit a great shot – you can make the hero putt or make the hero recovery. |
I have a good time every round, but today was really fun because the three of us are such good friends. I mean, sometimes when I play with him, I have to pretend like I like Stadler. |
I knew something was very wrong as I played in the JELD-WEN Tradition and the Wal-Mart First Tee Open at Pebble Beach these past two weeks. My play was very poor, and my knee was killing me. I knew I had no other choice than to have surgery on my knee immediately. |
I love doing things like this. I just love it. You know that interacting with sponsors, interacting with media and doing things to promote golf are right up our alley. |

I wanted Jack Lemmon to make that cut at the AT&T as badly as I've ever wanted anything. |
I was on the 15th tee. I just eagled 13 and birdied 14. Nicklaus birdied 10. I thought 'This is cool, Jack and I are now tied.' As I hit the water on 15, I looked over at the scoreboard and just as one guy was finished putting up the 'S-E-N' (in Jacobsen), the other guy was taking down the 'J-A-C.' |
I'm afraid there is a tendency today that a lot of the guys take the game too seriously. That's why the Champions Tour is so great. We're all out here just having a great time. |
