Before I was reading science fiction, I read Hemingway. Farewell to Arms was my first adult novel that said not everything ends well. It was one of those times where reading has meant a great deal to me, in terms of my development - an insight came from that book.

Conversion is certainly possible. We are working on things, but nothing is far enough along to show you.

I don't know if I am simply anything, but I have never felt drawn up into any sub-field or splinter genre. Not a good strategy for a career, I think.

I think it was neat. There was a lot of excitement with the new coach, and to have the family atmosphere _ where in the past there hasn't been much of a family atmosphere _ with the activities and such has been nice.

I've always thought of science fiction as being, at some level, a 19th-century business.

It bore absolutely no resemblance to the 'rude cabin' described by racial detractors, ... and was surrounded by a bake house, a milk house, a smokehouse, a chicken house with '44 big hens,' a workhouse, a cow house, and a barn that housed '30 big horned beasts.'

It's a fun story, a real scoop, but beneath the humor we are a company that tries to expand the box. It may take several months just to plan it. When we do it, we want to do it right.

It's a tradition for many people to grab a newspaper, their dog's leash and a plastic bag before going on a walk. They use the plastic bag to pick up his little gift.

Katrina, in some sense, helped that process be a little quicker.

Most people have two cars and a golf cart. We have two carts and a car.

Now, the city's asked us to look at dog waste specifically.

Poop power? Yes, it's possible to produce electricity, natural gas and even fuel from Rover's poop and other waste material. There are a lot of bugs to work out, steps to figure out, costs to be considered, but we are beginning to talk to the city about it and look into this area more actively.

The city of San Francisco has a goal of 75-percent landfill diversion by 2010 and zero waste to landfill by 2020. According to a recent waste characterization study, 3.8 percent of garbage from residential collections was animal feces — mostly from dogs and cats, although other animals could have been represented.

The old restaurant, College Street Station, was really here to serve the hotel guests, and it wasn't making money. Last year, at the end of July, we lost money.

They've worked incredibly well for us, and we're the second densest city in the country behind New York.
