In the camps, the malnutrition rates and morbidity increased instantly. Our colleagues from UNHCR [UN High Commissioner for Refugees], they also noticed that sexually-transmitted diseases increased too, like AIDS as some refugees had to turn to prostitution in exchange for food, which is very unfortunate. We also see that there was dropping out rates, increasing dropping out rates in schools, as parents do not send their kids to school anymore because they need them to work, to do dirty labor, and to get some money to buy food. |
Many people have lost all their food stocks and stoves in the quake ... and they need ready-to-eat food. |
The protection of refugees in some parts of the world, especially in Latin America, is critically undermined by the lack of sufficient international visibility and financial support. |
The WFP has nothing in its pipeline that would allow us to feed this refugee population beyond the end of this month. |
The window of opportunity to help is very short. |
We are trying to set up 30 helicopters to run 24 hours for the next couple of months for $100 million, and right now we can only run one giant MI26 and eight smaller helicopters, ... We just don't have the money. |
