People are always talking about momentum, but I don't believe in momentum. Momentum changes with one hanging curveball. That's the thing about baseball. It's the one sport where you really, really just never know. The guy you least expect gets into the postseason, hits .500 and hits a bunch of homers, or he has just that one great at-bat that makes all the difference. |
People want to do something practical, more than just send a check, which we realize is often the most practical thing to do. But it just seems so impersonal. People want to make connections and feel like they're part of something larger than themselves, so getting involved in collecting provisions, tools, toys or whatever, gives us a sense that we are really helping. |
Peter's got a good feel for the puck in the offensive part of the game, ... He's a give-and-go player and he knows what to do with the puck. He's got good vision and he gets his stick on the puck. He's got some good anticipation. I think his skill dictates top two lines and that's where he'll get a lot of opportunity in those areas, and we'll see what he does with it. |
Rachel is the kind of person that is going to take the smart shot. She knows that we need her to step up and score. If she doesn't score, she finds other ways to be a leader. She keeps some of those underclassmen in control and knowing what to do out there. You have two freshmen, a sophomore and two seniors out there. That's a lot for a point guard to have to control. |
Recognition is another important element of empowerment. Employees who make empowered decisions should be recognized and rewarded. Celebrate them. Feature them in the company publication. Give them a prime parking spot near the front door for a week. Throw a pizza party. By doing so, you are sending a message to the rest of the workforce that empowerment is important. |
Ronald Moore was presented with the challenge of reinventing a beloved story, which is a challenge often presented to producers of games. His example of creating one of the most brilliant and successful science fiction masterpieces in recent Hollywood history is a perfect inspirational case study to capture the imaginations of the game creation leaders who attend GDC. |
Saigon was an addicted city, and we were the drug: the corruption of children, the mutilation of young men, the prostitution of women, the humiliation of the old, the division of the family, the division of the country-it had all been done in our name... The French city... had represented the opium stage of the addiction. With the Americans had begun the heroin phase. |
Sarah Ruhl is fast becoming a major voice in the 21st century American theatre. Having witnessed the transformative effect of her unique and singular plays for over a decade, I have remained fiercely optimistic about the future of American theatre in the century ahead. I eagerly anticipate the transformation of the Arena audience in my own hometown of Washington, D.C. |
see the world in a very specific way and try to impose their views on the society at large. A lot of what I do is confront these assumptions and try to stop the assaults so the public can make an informed, unbiased decision. I like to take on causes that other firms might avoid. My clients appreciate that I like to get in the arena, take off the gloves and throw down. |
Sept. 11 made Americans aware of our national security vulnerability, and there is a good chance that Katrina will raise the public's consciousness about the weakness of our social safety net. I don't think there is going to be a call for big new government programs, but there is going to be a refocus from the public on dealing with poverty and the people left behind. |
Several of the commanders and people in Afghanistan have reviewed the tapes and they have come to different conclusions, ... The fact that one view has been widely reported, I acknowledge. Now, whether or not that is an accurate view is something that will be based not only on my viewing.. but discussion with other people who were present so that we can get the truth. |
She visited the prison this morning and was told by the guard that between 6:30 last night and midnight, they were taken away with little notice, put in a van, and they said they were taking them to Kandahar, ... I visited the Taliban embassy this morning and, while they did not come out and say 'yes they're in Kandahar,' they led me to believe that's where they were. |
She's day to day. I know she will not be 100 percent on Sunday. At this point in the season we're being cautious because we know how ankles are. So it's going to be probably game day before a determination is made and there's no pressure on Tiffany to come back. Obviously, I'm hopeful. And, obviously, there's 24-hour surveillance and treatment trying to get her ready. |
