I mostly wonder if we're a smart team. I don't know if we're tactically disciplined or that we bring the effort when we need it. For me, that hurts. Games like that make you hate it. I want to be a part of a winning franchise and one that wants to win championships and wants it so bad they'll die for it. They'll come off the field with blood on their knees. I don't think that's us and it sucks. |
I spoke out recently at a SARI (Sport Against Racism in Ireland) event in Dublin. I had lost my job three months beforehand and I had not really made any statements about that fact so the media were all assembled there. But only one thing was going to make the papers that day. Until then, I never had a problem with racism in football, but what I was going to say was about to be front-page news. |
I suppose he is putting bums on seats, but he has been getting a wee bit personal with some of the things he has said. He keeps saying it will be a war, but he has got me more fired up than I've been for any fight and we'll see how he copes when I meet him in the middle of the ring. I think I'm too good and too hot for him to handle. He's never been at this level before and he's in for a shock. |
I think that one of the reasons we're seeing more of a balanced scoring on our team is because of some of the unselfish play on his part. This year, he's really starting to turn into more of a complete player. Last year, he was mostly an offensive player. This year, he's really starting to bring up his defense. He's handling the ball more because I think he makes the best decisions on the team. |
I think the point the president makes repeatedly about the need to develop a missile defense is [that] the Cold War is over, and the United States needs to protect itself and our allies and our troops that are stationed abroad from a different nature of threat. And the paradigm that existed in the Cold War is no longer the most imperative paradigm that should guide America's defense structures. |
I think they will have to be some greater revenue sharing, reinstitution of a salary tax, ... But I don't think the big-market owners will agree to everything the smaller clubs want. I'm not sure Bud has got more of a whip than he had in the past. Just because he's been able to keep owners from talking under threat of a fine doesn't mean when they sit behind closed doors, they lie down for him. |
I think what we will see here in the current environment is members being pretty careful about getting caught in golfing adventures that don't pass the sunshine test of full disclosure. How long that will last remains to be seen, particularly for those who are golf-obsessed. There's a certain golf caucus on Capitol Hill, and playing golf is very high on their list of priorities for the country. |
I told the guys a little while ago that I hope we learned a lesson tonight. That's the kind of effort we're going to get from our opponent every night in the state playoffs, and we've got to be ready to match it and exceed it. To be quite honest, South Central deserved this win tonight. They out-hustled us. When you work that hard, things go your way. They made a play, and my hat's off to them. |
I told them to be ready for a battle. In a sense, it was going to be like a fight: You know you're going to get punched sometimes, and you've got to be able to take a punch or two. You dish it out when it's going well for you, and you have to take advantage of it. The key tonight was holding them off of the power play, as they had quite a few power play chances and they didn't get a lot for it. |
I wanted young kids to have the opportunity to idolize pro players the way I idolized the North American Soccer League players, ... I volunteered with the committee in Dallas, and when the committee resigned itself that they couldn't get a team and closed up shop, we went to work and negotiated the contract for the Cotton Bowl. I got the North Texas State Soccer Association to give its support. |
I was always impressed with her intellect. She was educated. She was politically astute. That is a very important aspect of leadership: If you are not wise, if you are not familiar with how to deal with people different from yourself, then you can't be an effective leader. She could talk to anyone. She was an effective legislator. She knew how to get legislation passed for those less fortunate. |
I was surprised, yeah. I don't know their cap situation and all those considerations, but he made a tremendous contribution to them at a very definable position. You either make (the kick) or you don't. It's not like analyzing a tackle, where you say he didn't move his feet quickly, or slide properly. A kicker is easy to measure and he made all the important kicks, plus the clutch ones as well. |
I went into spring training that first year in '82, and No. 23 was hanging up in my locker. I thought it was kind of an odd number. I believe I asked for No. 14, and [clubhouse manager Yosh Kawano] totally turned me down and said that number has been taken and retired. Yosh Kawano has been a good friend of mine, and he was the one that picked [No. 23] out for me and that was the perfect number. |
I'm excited the committee will see first hand the impact on Louisiana's coast. We are willing to do our share to supply the nation's energy needs, but in return we need the nation's help to rebuild the damage to our coastline. I am thrilled the committee has accepted my invitation to see firsthand the critical roll that Louisiana's ports and industry play in supplying our nation's energy needs. |
